Treseburg (village)

Highlight • Settlement

The Treseburg is one of numerous Bodetal castles that served to secure the old trade routes and offer protection to the local iron and steel industry. We know that, but not much more. Hardly any documentary data, hardly any mentions - built and destroyed by unknown persons. Just like its sister, the Schöneburg near Altenbrak.

Based on its architecture, it can be assumed that the Treseburg was built around the year 965. At that time and also in the centuries that followed, the Halberstadt diocese had feudal sovereignty in this region. But to deduce from this that the Halberstadt bishops were the builders is speculation. The Treseburg is mentioned again in 1088 in the Saxon Wars of Henry IV.

It is said to have been destroyed in the Peasants' War around 1525. It is said that the Treseburgers then built their houses from the remains of the castle and named their place Treseburg in memory of the castle. The castle is located on a narrow, 324-meter-high rock ridge, which is surrounded in a loop by the Bode to the east, west and south. The entire castle complex was not one of the smallest at around 45 x 100 meters. The keep, with a diameter of around 10 meters, was also quite defensive.

It is certain that when Merian visited the Harz in the middle of the 17th century, the castles Birkenfeld and Schöneburg above were already ruins and it can be assumed that the Treseburg was no different.

A climb up the rocky outcrop of Treseburg is possible and recommended. The paths are easy to walk and, in addition to the remains of the castle, two viewing points reward hikers with attractive views of Treseburg and the Bode Valley.

Every now and then you have the opportunity to stand directly on the banks of the Bode.
You should take advantage of this opportunity.

It is a welcome way to cool off in the summer.

Sonnenklippe (HWN 69)

Highlight • Natural Monument

It is one of the most mystical and legendary places in the Bodetal. A beech tree clings to the rock and has been growing small and stocky for many years. The Bode shoots past the cliff far below. There is a bank, information boards and a stamp office for the Harzer hiking nobility.

You can easily reach the Sonnenklippe from Treseburg. A 15 to 20-minute walk without major differences in altitude will take you to this point on a consistently easy hiking trail. A few hundred meters from the sun cliff you can dig your feet into the ground on a small pebble beach. In Treseburg there is a large, chargeable car park. Several restaurants invite you to stop there.

It's a good thing that this footbridge exists, otherwise it would have to be a switchback over the rocky outcrop
