St. Johannis Monastery Ruins (Stralsund)

Highlight • Historical Site

"One of the oldest buildings in Stralsund with a historically grown juxtaposition and interweaving of different architectural epochs, the individual phases of the dominant Gothic, Baroque and Classicism.
In 1254, the Franciscan order was allowed to found the monastery of St. John in the north of the old town. It is a large building complex grouped around two courtyards from the 13th to the 14th century. From the monastery church, originally a three-aisled brick hall church, only remains are left today.
A major fire destroyed in 1624, the 77 -meter-long Gothic hall church, which was then not rebuilt. Instead, around the middle of the 17th century, a sort of walkway was laid in the perimeter walls, and the choir was preserved as a church. After the Reformation, the city used the monastery as a poorhouse. Both components sank by the American bombardment in 1944 to rubble and ashes. The careful restoration of the monastery from 1963 to 1986 and the endeavor to restore the building as much as possible in its original architecture and old beauty, created here in the Schillstraße a popular residence for Stralsunder and visitors. The Räucherboden on the upper floor represents a cultural historical rarity. This is extended in its entire length on both sides of the central aisle with tiny flats whose smoke fumes end in the open roof truss. "Www.stralsundtourismus.de

Alter Markt Stralsund

Highlight • Historical Site

The Stralsund town hall is probably one of the most important and best known, secular buildings of the North German brick Gothic. His display wall with the seven pointed towers and the six star circles, whose silhouette falls towards the houses opposite (winter) or the pavement of the old market (summer) around noon, is unique. The Rostock town hall also had a Gothic brick display wall. However, this was covered so far by a baroque porch that only the seven towers of the original display wall are visible. The town hall is right next to the Nikolaikirche on the old market. It consists of two parallel, three-storey wings in the north-south direction, which were connected to each other by transverse structures on their narrow sides. The two wings, decorated with pointed arches, were built in the 13th century and form an inner courtyard with a colonnade, over which 1680 baroque galleries were built.
The transverse building on the south side also dates from the 13th century. The northern transverse building with its spacious arbor on the ground floor, a large hall above it and the wonderful brick display wall already mentioned was probably built at the beginning of the 15th century. A baroque portal with a Swedish coat of arms was built on the west side in the 18th century.

Stralsund Pilot House

Highlight • Monument

The Lotsenhaus Stralsund is a listed building in the port of the city of Stralsund in Hafenstraße with the postal address Hafenstraße 50.

The house was built in 1901 as a pilot's watch. The two-storey brick-roofed brick building with up to two meters thick masonry stands on two crossed barrel vaults in a former casemate of the port fortifications. It was built within three months by the Stralsund companies Theichen and Mackenthun & Sohn according to plans by the architect Ernst Dalmer. The semicircular closed east side is windowed, designed like a tower and crowned with a pointed roof. The western entrance side of the building, which stands on a high plinth, shows a high stepped gable with a panel structure. The two single-storey extensions also have panels.

Originally the revetment was green.

The building was extensively renovated from June 2009 to June 2010; it is used as a port authority.

The house is located on the outskirts of the city area recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site of the “historic old towns of Stralsund and Wismar”. It is entered in the list of architectural monuments in Stralsund with the number 833.

Sund Promenade

Highlight • Trail

This promenade stretches along the banks of the Strelasund from the Nassen Dreieck to the Schwedenschanze. The avenue has existed since 1926, but was called "Hindenburg-Ufer" from 1927 to 1945 because of a visit by Paul von Hindenburg in the same year. After the war, it was of course renamed "Ernst-Thälmann-Ufer", but has been known by its current name since 1990. The beautiful street is lined with such important buildings as the Hansa-Gymnasium Stralsund, the Hanse-Klinikum and the seaside bathing establishment.
