About the House

The Rudolf Schäfer House is located at Große Straße 15 (pedestrian zone) in Rotenburg.

This listed half-timbered house, dating from the 17th century (built in 1675), is one of the last remaining small-town burgher houses typical of Rotenburg.

For centuries, its inhabitants practiced their crafts or engaged in trade, often also farming.

In 1911, Rudolf Schäfer acquired the house from the master tailor Johann Gerken.

He had large windows installed in the upper rooms and set up his workshop there. He lived there with his family from 1912 until his death in 1961.

In 2011, the city of Rotenburg acquired ownership of the house, renovated it in 2014, and transferred ownership to the Rudolf Schäfer Association, which now uses it—in cooperation with the city's tour guides—for exhibitions and events.

"Three generations"
This group, created by the artist Carsten Eggers, was donated by the Rotenburg businessman and honorary citizen Hinrich Heineke and set up in 1995. The "Three Generations" find their appeal in the fact that the presentation is clear. The title completes this: "Grandmother, Mother and Child". The artist depicts a situation that almost everyone has experienced. The grandmother, whose bag the child is leaning towards, has almost always put something back that cannot be found with the mother. Children look into their grandmother's bag as they pass by and enjoy the work of art just as much as adults do.

City district (By the Water)

Highlight • Structure

The Stadtstreek flowing past the reservoir was created artificially in 1566. The rubble from a large Bran-des was dumped into the little river Alt-Wiedau. So they built a new watercourse as a canal through the middle of the city. Due to a provision in the legacy of the widow Anna Magdalena Schmidt from 1833, two Rotenburg locksmiths made the iron grating on the Streek in 1866. The bridge is decorated with geraniums every May. It is therefore also known as the "Geranium Bridge".
