Wolf Pit Seibersbach

Highlight • Historical Site

The structure hidden in the Great Soon is located, difficult to reach, in a small clearing, surrounded by a coniferous forest. The recess, lined with quarry stones on one side, is about two to three meters deep and about three to four meters in diameter. It can be clearly seen that the forest floor on the opposite side of the quarry stone wall has slipped further and further over time. Originally the Wolfskaut was slightly oval, with a diameter of three meters and a depth of about 4.5 meters.
The Seibersbacher Kaut is probably relatively well preserved due to its remote location.

Fishing method
The fishing method on which this wolf chew in Seibersbach is based is very old. The chew was most likely made well before 1852, as the last wolf was killed in the Soonwald on May 24th, 1852. During the hunt, the Wolfskaut was provided with a kind of enclosure in which there was a flap door. This construction was also known as the wolf garden. The hunters used a so-called slut, a piece of game that was pecked at to make it scream. This lured the wolves close to the Kaut, after which the wolves were driven to the pit or the hatch, where they fell into the recess. This method used to make it possible to catch several wolves at once and to hold large wolf hunts. Such a large wolf hunt in the Soonwald is documented, for example, from 1619.
