Very interesting and quite rare - a historical memorial cross dedicated to the victims of the former witch trials - next to it a newer information board with the names of the local victims.

Flörsheimer Schweiz

Highlight • Forest

Between the Flörsheim district of Falkenberg and the Flörsheim lookout tower lies the "Flörsheim Switzerland." Compared to the otherwise flat southern foothills of the Taunus Mountains, this scenically stunning area boasts relatively significant differences in elevation. The Wickerbach stream is the defining feature of this "Switzerland." The floodplain, home to numerous rare animal and plant species, has been a nature reserve since 1998.

There are 191 "Switzerlands" worldwide. At least. Sixty-seven of them are located in Germany alone. This is according to the Swiss National Tourist Office; the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" even claims to have counted 233. This honorary title is bestowed upon regions that are somewhat wilder than their surroundings, evoking a romanticized vision of the real thing. Often, just a few prominent hills with steep slopes and a view are enough to earn this moniker. The Flörsheim Switzerland is certainly one of the flattest of these "Switzerlands." Just think of the Nassau Switzerland region a little further along in the Taunus mountains near Eppstein. And even the Holstein Switzerland region in Schleswig reaches the 160-meter mark.

Eisenbaum Observation Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

The iron tree is located in a scenic nature reserve. The tree's two platforms offer a great view of the surrounding landscape. The tree has a solar-powered sound system. This is why "the tree is silent at night and speaks during the day" as soon as you step onto the upper platform. The tree tells you details about its construction. The tree also draws attention to the fact that it is clearly recognizable as an artificial tree - in contrast to genetically modified trees.

Historic Lime Kiln Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

The historic lime kilns on the country road between Flörsheim and Hochheim are unique in Hesse: There are no other in our federal state that are as well preserved as these. As an industrial monument, the lime kilns are a piece of craftsmanship history as well as local history - after all, they provided the plastering material for countless Florsheim houses.

The mighty round buildings are impressive witnesses from pre-industrial times. Its history goes back to the 18th century, when the lime kilns belonged to a local brickworks. This plant, which is important in terms of industrial history, provided the basis for the lime plaster of many houses in Flörsheim. However, the history of the limestone economy in this place most likely goes back much further. The Romans probably already quarried limestone here and burned it.
Lime burning used to be a tedious business. Burnt lime is an extremely important building material. Before industrial processing began at the beginning of the 20th century, lime was usually burned in family businesses. The raw material was poured from above through the filling openings. The accessible roof construction made of glass and steel above the exposed plant conveys exactly the same view as the lime burner had when it was being filled and emptied.
In order to keep the kiln running, the family members took turns loading it day and night. The Flörsheim lime kilns were on fire until 1921. Then the Martinis, the last family to do this backbreaking job, went out of business. The slumber of the massive wall ensemble lasted for three quarters of a century. In the years 1997 to 1998, the Regionalpark RheinMain GmbH had the ruins uncovered and conserved. Today they are designed as a monument and can be visited.
