View of Linlithgow Loch and Linlithgow Palace

Highlight • Castle

Linlithgow Loch is a shallow freshwater loch which is interesting as an example of how lakes can adapt to eutrophication. Over the years high levels of agricultural runoff has entered the loch creating algal blooms. It's now a SSSI as a lowland eutrophic loch which supports representative examples of aquatic and emergent plant communities.
There is a nice trail around the loch to run with great views of the castle.

Linlithgow Loch

Highlight • Lake

Spot the manmade islands on the loch - originally, there were piers leading to it from the loch's banks...

Forth and Clyde Canal Tunnel

Highlight • Structure

The islands on the Loch used to be manmade wooden buildings with a pier running to it! I believe this dates back to 11th century.
