Vorarlberg State Conservatory

Highlight • Monument

The history of the house goes back to the Stella Matutina Jesuit College, founded in 1856, whose building it uses today. The state conservatory was founded in 1977 as a state-owned conservatory and converted into a GmbH in 2003. The first director was Anselm Hartmann, during whose term of office until 2006, among other things, the conclusion of the cooperation agreement between the State Conservatory and the Mozarteum University in Salzburg fell.

Feldkirch Water Tower

Highlight • Historical Site

Water tower - an important monument of the Montfort city
First mentioned in 1482
All three towers used to be an important part of the defense system and are now among the best preserved medieval monuments in Vorarlberg. The name water tower comes from the time when there was an access to the Ill, the river was the city boundary for centuries. Therefore, the city wall was reinforced by the water tower, which is first mentioned in 1482, and served to defend the city center against the Confederates. On the west side of the tower there is a fresco with the Austrian coat of arms with a helmet bush and peacock feathers as an ornament. The year 1518 heralds the ties between the city and its residents and Austria. Bullet impacts show that many a cheeky enemy has broken their teeth here.
Prevents demolition
In 1924, the demolition of the water tower was discussed when constructional difficulties arose to build an underground connecting canal at the water tower and the abutment of the Franz Joseph Bridge. Had the construction engineers had their way, the venerable water tower would have had to be demolished because of this connecting channel. The Heimatschutzverein (Heimatschutzverein) and the Ministry of Public Works opposed this plan, which meant that the building could be preserved after hard disputes. The medieval building was underpinned with various concrete foundations and columns and the connecting channel was led through under the tower.

Churer Gate

Highlight • Monument

Churer Tor, Feldkirch
Built before 1270, the Churer Tor was completely renewed in the course of the re-fortification of the city in 1491. A Vorwerk in front of the six-storey gate tower, built in 1591, was removed when the city ditches were leveled after 1826. The Churer Tor is the only remaining tower-like city gate in Vorarlberg today.
In the past, the Churer Tor was also called the Hewers and Salztor. The name Salztor, used after 1615, comes from the neighboring salt barn where salt from Hall was stored and which was demolished in 1905. The official apartment of the salt janitor was also located in the Churer Tor, while the gatekeeper himself lived in a small house nearby.
The important trade route to Chur once led through this gate over the Heiligkreuzbrücke, the only crossing over the Ill in Feldkirch.

Cat Tower, Feldkirch
The eight-story, round tower is part of the Feldkirch city fortifications, which were built under the German King Maximilian I and the Habsburg Vogt Hans von Königsegg from 1491 to 1507. As a result of the Swabian War, the tower was increased again in 1500, so that construction lasted until 1507.
In the 17th century it was rebuilt as a bell tower. On this occasion, the large bell was hung in the tower in 1665 because the city's church towers were too small for it.
The Cat Tower was destroyed in the city fire in August 1697, but was subsequently rebuilt. The tower is 40 m high and has a circumference of 38 m.
The name of the tower comes from the cannons that were once stationed on it, which had cat and lion heads as sights.
The largest bell in Vorarlberg hangs in the bell chamber, which is also the second largest historical bell in Austria. It is the sixth largest bell in Austria and is owned by the city of Feldkirch. The bell, originally cast in Lindau in 1665, had to be recast ten years later due to a crack. It fell during the city fire in 1697 and was recast. The current bell was cast in 1857 from the one from 1697 in the workshop of Josef Anton Grassmayr. The wooden bell chair also dates from this time. From 1962 onwards, an electric drive replaced the eight men previously required to ring the bell. The old wooden yoke was replaced by a deep-cranked steel yoke in the 1980s. This resulted in a high ringing angle and such a hard strike that the clapper broke twice and was welded within a relatively short period of time. Fortunately, the valuable bell survived this overuse without cracking. In preparation for solving the problem, the bell was weighed in 2009, which revealed a weight that was almost a ton higher than that stated on it (7500 kg). The Perner company in Passau rebuilt the system in 2010, replaced the steel yoke with an oak yoke and hung a new clapper weighing 450 kg. The clapper catcher from the 1980s, which also put excessive strain on the bell, was removed. Since 2010, the bell has been driven by two electronically controllable ringing motors for the purpose of gently swinging on and off. The bell is rung on high holidays, Fridays at 3 p.m. (the hour of Christ's death), and during the grape harvest at Ardetzenberg.

Schattenburg Castle

Highlight • Castle

The historic Schattenburg
The Schattenburg towers over the city and was the seat of the Counts of Montfort until the end of the 14th century. The keep, the highest part of the Schattenburg, is a viewing platform and allows a view over the whole of Feldkirch. It is particularly interesting for castle enthusiasts, as the complex has been preserved almost unchanged despite some extensions. Here you will also find the Schattenburg Museum and an inn, which invites you to linger and is famous for its giant schnitzel.
