Chapel of the Marshal

Highlight • Religious Site

Chapel dedicated to Mary; located in the middle of a bed of lime trees and accessible via a lane with ash trees. Built in the 18th century in memory of Field Marshal Jan-Filips-Eugeen de Merode, Lord of Herselt and Westerlo (1674-1732), who had the beautiful avenues constructed in the vicinity of the castle, see introduction Bergom). The exact year of construction has not yet been determined, but the chapel is present on the Ferraris map, drawn up in 1771-1777. Popularly also called "Molenskapelleke" after the former proximity to the Bergom mill.

View of De Witput

Highlight • Lake

The Witput is a historic pond in the middle of agricultural land. From the garvel you have a beautiful view. With a bit of luck you can watch water birds flying in and out.

On the other side of the gravel is the Kwacht pond. The Witput and the Kwacht are among the last remaining ponds in the vicinity.
Around both ponds coppice management is being carried out to tackle the silting up of the ponds. Coppice management allows sufficient light to reach the ponds and reduces the accumulation of organic waste. This gives various plant and animal species the opportunity to establish themselves here. An amphibian tunnel was also constructed so that toads, frogs and salamanders could find a safe passage between the water features and Hertberg.

Blauberg Church

Highlight • Religious Site

Oriented, neo-Gothic church, formerly surrounded by lime trees and an enclosed cemetery, see old postcard, now surrounded by a paved square. In honor of the writer Willem Elsschot (1882-1960) who spent part of his youth here and took his pseudonym from Helschot, a marshy nature reserve in the area, a statue was erected south of the church in 1990, stolen in 1998.
Parish recognized by Royal Decree of June 5, 1857. On December 1, 1858, permission was granted to build a church on land donated by Count Charles de Merode. Construction of a single-aisled neo-Gothic church in 1859-1860 after a design by architect J. Van Gastel, see memorial plaque to the right of the entrance, already registered in the land register in 1860. Enlarged in 1935 with two side aisles after a design by architect A. Langerock; the municipal permit for this extension dates from 25.04.1935; registered in the land registry in 1937
