View of Monschau

Highlight • Viewpoint

This picturesque little town in the upper Rur Valley never ceases to fascinate. Both the town itself and the walk around the hills, which offers a variety of views of the valley, the castle, and the Haller ruins, are fascinating. For me, it's one of the most beautiful places in the Eifel/Ardennes region.

The Laufenbach in Monschau

Highlight • River

The Laufenbach flows into the Rur in the old town of Monschau.
There are several mills and former cloth mills on the banks of the Laufenbach. The best-known buildings are the historic mustard mill from 1882, the representative residential building Haus Troistorff of the Troistorff cloth-making family and the Red House of the Scheibler family of cloth-makers.
Definitely worth seeing!

View from Engelsley

Highlight • Viewpoint

According to regional oral tradition, the rock formations Engelsley and Teufelsley owe their names to an old legend connected with the construction of a monastery in the Monschau region. The tale recounts that the devil was enraged that a house of worship was to be built on this site. In his anger, he dislodged a massive boulder from the surrounding hills to destroy the building and halt construction.

However, as he approached with the stone, an angel confronted him. To protect the monastery, the angel is said to have reached for an even larger rock. With this, he blocked the devil's path and thwarted his plan. The two rock formations—so the legend goes—fell to the ground and remained in the landscape as a visible symbol of this supernatural conflict.

Monschau is a beautiful town and always worth a visit. There are also some crime novels with the journalist Nusselein and his cat.
