Christkindl Pilgrimage Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

It is essential to leave the official Enns cycle path next to the main road here. But wonderfully relaxed and without car traffic along the Enns directly to Steyr into the city.

Brucknerstiege and Mesnerhaus

Highlight • Historical Site

The Bruckner Steps next to the sexton's house were built in 1600. They formerly served as the main entrance to the town's parish church.

North of the town's parish church, situated at the former cemetery, stands a remarkable late Gothic building dating from the 16th/early 17th century. It is a rectangular structure with a two-story addition. The three-story facade facing Pfarrgasse (Parish Lane) features an irregular bay layout, with some sections featuring late Gothic chamfered stone jambs. The facades display painted stone detailing and some simple window surrounds. On the cemetery side, a late Gothic-style covered staircase with columns leads to the upper floor, adjoining a two-bay arcade. Some of the doors have late Gothic shouldered arch portals. To the east, the so-called Bruckner Steps, built around 1600, connect to the main entrance from the town square to the church. At the foot of Pfarrgasse is a rusticated portal with a Renaissance frame and remnants of sgraffito decoration. The wide staircase is covered and ends at a grilled, round-arched portal with stone jambs on the ground floor of the cemetery-side extension of the Messnerhaus.

Bürgerhaus Grünmarkt 8

Highlight • Historical Site

Three-storey town house with hipped roof and small inner courtyard, the core of which dates from the 16th century. The two five-axis upper floors protrude strongly, resting on profiled corbels supported by pillars. Windows with profiled late Gothic stone surrounds. Facade design from 1766. Rich stucco decoration, especially above the windows of the first floor. In the central axis between the 1st and 2nd floors there is a fresco of St. Anne the Self-Portrait in a stucco cartouche.

Tunnel of Remembrance, Steyr

Highlight • Historical Site

The Gallery of Remembrance is a permanent exhibition on forced labor and concentration camps in the city of Steyr in Upper Austria. The exhibition is located in a former air raid shelter under Lamberg Castle, which was built in 1943 by forced laborers from the Steyr-Münichholz concentration camp.
The Mauthausen Committee Steyr is the sponsoring association and responsible for the content of the exhibition. The scientific curation was carried out by the historian Regina Wonisch in cooperation with a team of curators from the association, who were involved in the conceptual design of the content. The association received scientific and conceptual advice from contemporary historian Bertrand Perz. The Museum Arbeitswelt Steyr is responsible for educational support.[1] Bernhard Denkinger designed the exhibition. It has been published in several architecture magazines

Bummerl House, Steyr

Highlight • Historical Site

The town's most important town house on the town square can be described as the most outstanding late Gothic building of its kind in Austria. Stadtplatz 32. The town's landmark is considered to be one of the best-preserved Gothic secular buildings in the country. Part of the building dates back to the 13th century. In the 19th century, the "Zum Goldenen Löwen" inn was located here. The lion can still be seen as a figurehead today. The visitors to the inn found this lion too cute, so they called it "Bummerl" (= small, fat dog). So over time the Bummerlwirtshaus became the Bummerlhaus.
