The tower belonged to a 15th century church. This church was extensively renovated in 1709-1710, retaining the Gothic tower and the Gothic choir. In 1784 the church was enlarged in an easterly direction and converted into a three-aisled church.
In 1937 a fire broke out in the church and it was demolished in 1938, after which a new St. John's Baptist Church was built about a hundred meters away. The tower was preserved and was protected in 1950, but the spire also went up in flames in 1957, just before the restoration was completed. Since then the tower no longer has a spire.
It is a square, brick tower with four sections. The plinth is made of iron sandstone. Some parts of the old church, at least the 18th and 19th century renovations, are still visible. A cemetery was set up around the tower.
