Schönenbach Vorsäß Settlement

Highlight • Settlement

Schoenenbach in summer
The mountain pasture settlement of Schönenbach can be reached on several hiking trails. Starting points for longer hikes are Bezau, Bizau, Sibratsgfäll and Egg-Schetteregg. The valley floor can be explored on a leisurely circular hiking trail. A very scenic, not too demanding mountain bike tour leads from Sibratsgfäll to Schönenbach. It takes about two hours there and back. Schönenbach is also a destination for those who are interested in caves. Near the mountain pasture settlement is the "Schneckenlochhöhle", which is only accessible with guided tours.
Tip: In the summer months, a bus runs several times a day from Bezau and Bizau to Schönenbach. Holders of the Bregenzerwald & Großes Walsertal guest card can use the bus free of charge. The settlement can also be reached by car on the toll road from Bizau.

St. Valentine’s Parish Church, Bizau

Highlight • Religious Site

Parish Church of St. Valentin, Bizau
The first chapel was built in 1472, until then the population had to go to church in Reuthe. In 1581 a separate chaplaincy was to be built, at which point the chapel was already consecrated and equipped with the bare necessities. If it wasn't built larger from the start, it may have been expanded over time. In any case, it must have been relatively spacious around the middle of the 17th century, otherwise it would hardly have been possible to agree on the rules for alternating worship services. The donation of the fresco painting by Landammann Johann Waldner also falls during this time. He suffered from epilepsy in his old age, which is perhaps why he donated the fresco depicting St. Valentine, the patron against "falling addictions".
In 1776/77 the choir altar was renovated; On this occasion, a church clock and a confessional were also purchased and the tabernacle was redesigned. In 1782 three altars were consecrated: the high altar in honor of St. Valentine, one side altar in honor of St. Monica, the other in honor of the Rosary Queen. In 1788 another structural innovation took place, a "witness" to this is the year carved in stone above the side door, which can still be seen today.
In 1854 the side altars were rebuilt by the Bizau carpenter and sculptor Anton Rüscher. These received the dedication in honor of the Rosary Queen or, on the epistle page, in honor of Our Lady of Consolation.
The church tower had a gable roof until 1895 and housed the sacristy on the lowest floor. This was then moved to a building attached to the east side of the apse, and the tower was given its current appearance with a pointed gable roof. The two side altar leaves were painted in 1900 by the Bizau painter Josef Reich; What is interesting is the depiction of the town of Bizau in the left corner of the picture on the epistle page, which depicts St. Augustine. Alois Reich, the brother of the painter Josef Reich, created the Aloisius statue for the Aloisius devotion founded in 1919, as well as the statues of St. Joseph and St. Mother Anna, both of which are on the side walls below the organ gallery.
In 1910 the cemetery was expanded; until then there was an ossuary in the middle of the cemetery. The cemetery chapel was built in 1995.
