Woodhenge of Meers

Highlight • Monument

A monument made of 2000-year-old trees can be seen on the banks of the Grenzmaas.

The trees were dredged up during excavations near Stevenswwert.

Your list is also very interesting and shows the following: the course of the Maas, the neighboring Maas villages, the 4 cardinal points and the locations of the summer and winter solstices.

There is more information on an information board.

In the Meerser Koegriend along the Maas, there are fifteen tree trunks that initially give you the impression that a section of forest has burned down here or that its felling did not go entirely well. The truth is quite different.

The tree trunks, sometimes 1400 to 1700 years old, are part of a new monument. The fifteen fossilized trees were found under the gravel during excavations in Stevensweert. The Ark foundation, which develops nature around the Grensmaas, with support from the province and Maaswerken, the company executing the Grensmaas project, has ensured that the trees that will form the new monument are standing upright in the Koegriend in Meers, and are placed in a winding row as a monument to nature along the winding Maas.

The imposing giants, up to two meters thick and up to eight meters long, symbolize the riparian forest that grew here, but also the new forest that will rise here on the bare plain that the gravel diggers will soon leave behind. They symbolize the power of Mother Nature.

The trunks are intended to serve as a compass, calendar, and map. Some mark the four cardinal directions, while others mark the beginning of the different seasons with their shadows. Still other trees are aligned with the surrounding Maas towns, Meers, Elsloo, Maasband, Stein, and the Belgian towns of Kotem and Maasmechelen.

Together they form a winding figure, which captures the current course of the Maas. In December 2003, these ancient forest giants were anchored with steel straps to a steel base plate, which in turn is attached to a thick steel pipe, which was first driven into the ground. The final unveiling took place on June 21, 2004.

Ut Bakkes Maasband

Highlight • Cafe

The characteristic cottage, also a bakery, at Leuterhoekweg 20 in Maasband has been converted into a cosy, nostalgic living room. At Ut Bakkes Maasband you can enjoy delicious home-made Limburg Vlaai and a nice cup of coffee, cozy inside in winter and on the terrace in summer enjoying the sun and the Limburg countryside. Ut Bakkes is therefore the ideal resting place during a cycling or walking tour in the beautiful south!

The construction of the high water bridge between Maasband and Meers will start in February 2020 with the construction of the work site. The actual construction of the bridge pillars begins a month later.

It is the second high water bridge that the Consortium is building. The high water bridge between Visserweert and Illikhoven was built in 2017.

The construction of the bridge in Maasband, in combination with the arrival of new quays, will take about fifteen months. A secondary channel of the Meuse is being built at Maasband to give more space for the drainage at high water levels.

In January, Consortium Grensmaas will inform the residents of Meers, Maasband and Urmond about the work. During the construction of the bridge, the Consortium ensures that residents receive answers to their questions and comments quickly and without barriers. To this end, walk-in hours are regularly organized and residents can also visit a shack that is placed at the entrance of Maasband.

The bridge was designed in consultation with the residents and the municipality.

The Grensmaas consortium has internally fired the starting signal for the preparatory work for the construction of the bridge.

Maasband, Meuse Valley

Highlight • Settlement

In a remote corner of South Limburg lies a lovely hamlet consisting of three streets. Yet there is a café, a restaurant and a chapel. The café serves ice cream, the restaurant has an idyllic Maas terrace and the chapel commemorates a gruesome event. The Moordkruiskapel was built in honour of a 45-year-old Maasband woman who was murdered on her property by an angry neighbour in the early 19th century.

Since then, peace seems to have returned. The nearby gravel extraction is being phased out and the river nature is given every opportunity to expand. The area is rural and rich in birds. Ideal to explore during a walk or bike ride.
