Piumogna Waterfall

Highlight • Waterfall

The waterfall of Piumognas is 43 meters high, one of the most spectacular of Ticino! For nature lovers an unmissable attraction, even if you only have a few hours in the Leventina Valley. It is within easy walking distance, free parking is available nearby. The suspension bridge over the stream gives the powerful waterfall its name, visitors can watch from here this natural spectacle of rare beauty.

For a cozy break in the countryside there is a picnic area with tables. If you want to stretch your legs, you will explore the mountain along the trail and find other impressive waterfalls. The source of the torrent, on the other hand, can only be reached by means of demanding mountain climbs and is thus reserved for experienced mountain climbers. They will be pleased to have the opportunity to rest in the Campo Tencia hut. The torrent of Piumogna rises from a small mountain lake, only the size of a room, and is located 2'482 m above sea level.

Giornico is a village in Leventina, known for the “Battaglia dei Sassi Grossi” (the Battle of the Big Rocks), which took place in 1478. It was an important event in the history of Switzerland, in which the Confederates defeated the Milanese and gained control of the Gotthard Pass. The village is located in a fork in the river that forms a peculiar islet and boasts a rare pearl: the church of San Nicola, an outstanding example of the Romanesque period. Also interesting is the ethnographic museum, where visitors can get an impression of the valley's past, supported by interactive games, historical documents and photographs.

The important "Battaglia dei Sassi Grossi", in which the Confederates defeated the Milanese at the end of 1478, is commemorated with a monument by the Ticino sculptor Apollonio Pessina, which stands at the northern entrance to the village. In the historic center, divided into two halves by the cantonal road, are some medieval buildings. The upper part surrounds the 14th century Torre Attone with its square plan, which has been scaffolded for years and is awaiting restoration. In the lower part, between the cantonal road and the left bank of the river, traces of the old road still remain .

A kind of monument dedicated to the "head" of one of the machines used to dig the Gotthard tunnel. The tunnel connects the Canton of Ticino to the Canton of Uri.
