Dijkwater Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural

From the dike, a view of the mudflats of the Dijkwater nature reserve in the municipality of Sirjansland. In 1305, an area reclaimed ('s heers Jans land) where a channel (Dijkwater) provided access to 4 harbour towns. The Dijkwater is the historical remnant of the Gouwe, which separated the islands of Schouwen, Dreischor and Duiveland. In 1374, the northern branch of the Gouwe was dammed and the Noordgouwe polder was created. In 1610, Schouwen and Duiveland were also effectively connected. During the major flood disaster in 1953, the inlet of the Dijkwater was one of the places where a major dike breach occurred. After the flood disaster, the area was reclaimed and a nature reserve was created where numerous water birds can be spotted.

Aeolus Mill

Highlight • Monument

This mill dates from 1739 and is called 'Aeolus', which means 'God of the wind'. It is a ground sailor and top cruiser. Initially its name was 'Oostmolen', because there was another mill on the west side of Dreischor, on the dike on the Zonnemaire side.
There was also a period when the mill was called 'De Koekoek'. The mill was in operation until 1962, when it came into private hands and was given a residential purpose. In 2000, the mill was purchased by the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland. The mill was restored to milling condition through restoration.

Beautiful to look at, but make sure you don't get fooled here.

View of the Grevelingenmeer

Highlight • Viewpoint

Brouwershaven, commonly called Brouw, is located right on the Grevelingenmeer. It is a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts, and the marina is always full in the summer. The place is one of the protected city and village views of Zeeland.
The tour boat Rederij Zeeland departs from nearby Den Osse for boat trips on the Grevelingen. In the summer months there is the opportunity to sail on a historic sailing ship from the dock.

Lovely gravel path from Scharendijke to Brouwershaven with a view over the Grevelingenmeer. Tip: be friendly to walkers, you share the narrow path with them (!)

View over the Grevelingenmeer

Highlight • Viewpoint

Technical gravel path along the Grevelingenmeer. The view over the Grevelingenmeer is brilliant. At the end (or start if you drive from Ouddorp) is the harbor of Ouddorp. Take a tour of the harbor. It's not big, but that's why it's nice to see.

Grevelingenmeer Tour. Visit two islands in one day (Goeree-Overflakkee and Schouwen-Duiveland)

Showing Translation

Today we went from Sirjansland via Dreischor (great little town with an old mill and houses) to Brouwershaven. There in the marina Den Osse. Tours depart from there. I then spoke to the captain if he could drop us off in Port Zeeland. That wasn't possible because of the water level, but he would take us to the Middelplaat Haven. …

A lovely bike ride that runs along the northern side of the Grevelingenmeer on separate (outside the dike) cycle paths, where you can spot flamingos at Battenoord during this period (from November to the end of March).

South of the Grevelingenmeer, you ride largely on quiet roads between the farmlands.

It had been on the agenda for a long time, and today was the right day for the day trip around the largest saltwater lake in Western Europe: the Grevelingenmeer. With the clearest water in the whole of the Netherlands, the popular water sports area Brouwersdam is adjacent.

Super nice tour. Even though it was by the water, it was too warm for me. Still an experience. As always, the bike paths are great. You would have to live in the Netherlands.

Showing Translation

The tour was great, except for the stretch between Ouddorp and Herkingen. No water, just dikes, bushes and wide fields.
But maybe that was because of the autumnal fog that suddenly settled over the land in the afternoon and made everything look gloomy. Well, it is already September...

A tour around the Grevelingenmeer is also available as a 4K video on my YouTube channel,

"Klaus eBike Channel".

Best regards, Klaus.
