Rhine Bridge Stein am Rhein

Highlight • Bridge

The first bridge was built at the narrowest point of the Rhine near Stein at the beginning of the 13th century, probably on the instructions of the abbot of the St. Georgen monastery. The wooden bridge was first mentioned in documents in 1267 and consisted of an open footbridge resting on around ten pole bays. Between 1972 and 1974 the current road bridge was built, which has two lanes and sidewalks on both sides.

It is the only German enclave in the country of the Confederates. A few quick facts about it:
Two bus stops, two telephone numbers, two currencies, 1 German place-name sign, 1 German license plate, 1 German post office and so wonderfully located on the Upper Rhine.

Road bridge open 24 hours between Gailingen and Diessenhofen, border between Germany and Switzerland, vehicles up to 10 tons. It is the only completely preserved wooden bridge on the Upper Rhine and is one of the rare Pfahljoch bridges. In 1972 the building owned by the city of Diessenhofen was declared a "Protected Monument" by the Swiss Confederation and the Canton of Thurgau and has been under federal protection since 1981!
