From here you have a great view over the Danube to Dürnstein, easy to recognize by the blue tower of the collegiate church. The ruin Dürnstein towers over the town.

Spitz–Arnsdorf Cable Ferry

Highlight • Bridge

The crossing is always a welcome change of pace and a memorable experience. Beautiful views of the Danube are an added bonus! The cable ferry in Spitz on the Danube is a historic and fascinating mode of transport, part of the unique cultural heritage of the Wachau region. It connects Spitz with the opposite town of Arnsdorf and offers a traditional and environmentally friendly way to cross the Danube. Cable ferries have existed for centuries and were once an important link before bridges spanned the Danube. The ferry in Spitz is still in operation today to preserve the tradition and charm of the Wachau. In addition to its practical use, the cable ferry now also serves as a tourist attraction, offering a glimpse into the past. The crossing takes about 5–10 minutes and offers magnificent views of the Wachau landscape, characterized by vineyards and historic sites. The journey is smooth and allows you to experience the Danube up close. From the ferry, you have a fantastic view of the picturesque village of Spitz with its famous vineyards and historic buildings.

Spitz on the Danube

Highlight • Settlement

Spitz an der Donau is one of the most picturesque villages in the Wachau and an absolute must for any visitor to the region. It is located directly on the Danube and is surrounded by terraced vineyards. A worthwhile destination for a tour. You can linger here for a while, there is a lot to discover! A very beautiful, tranquil place with some sights.

The narrow alleys and old houses in Renaissance and Baroque style convey a journey back in time to the Middle Ages. The noteworthy town hall square is a central meeting point with charming pubs and shops. Hinterhaus Castle ruin, a medieval castle ruin, towers above the village and offers spectacular views of the Wachau.

Spitz is idyllically situated between the Danube and the famous vineyards of the Wachau, offering one of the most beautiful backdrops in the region. The village is perfectly suited as a destination or stopover for a bike tour. The place combines nature, history, and enjoyment in a unique way.

July 19, 2024,#39/24 Krems nach Spitz und retour
We arrived in Krems yesterday and drove straight to Spitz on the Danube, through Drensteinfurt, Stein etc. Crossing the Danube from Spitz on the rolling ferry is sensational and recommended...then returning on the other side of the Danube, it was beautiful 😍

Today in Dürnstein I sailed quite elegantly in front of a group of seniors due to a manhole cover 🤣 Luckily only a few bruises and abrasions 😅 It was a wonderful round with a friend of mine and the Wachau in the apricot season is a must-see 🍊 With the roller ferry it is always an experience! Unfortunately, you …

A wonderful little tour through beautiful towns and the stunning landscape of the Wachau! 😍

We started west from Krems, through Stein, Dürnstein, and Weißenkirchen to the turning point in Spitz.

Strengthened by a good coffee ☕️, we climbed up to the castle ruins in Dürnstein. From up there, you have a truly fantastic view! 😍
Sturdy footwear was required …

In initially overcast but later warm sunny weather, we cycled the Danube cycle path from Spitz to Krems, crossed the Danube and cycled back on the other side. The ferry took us back to Spitz over the Danube. We passed through nice wine villages and vineyards.

Short stay in Krems with bike path tour and a lot of culture, the actually quite colorful Wachau does not look like it in the pictures because the announced nice weather only arrived in the late afternoon, during the tour there was hardly any sun but no raindrops either...
In Krems very nice old town and from there the bike …

From Dürnstein towards Melk. The plan was to take the ferry to the other side of the Danube. Didn't work. The ferry didn't run, back to Weiskirchen, there with the F and then to Krems. Beautiful old town with a lot of history. The cycle path led through vineyards and orchards. Very nice ferry over

Komoot didn't like part of our route and therefore shortened it. There were three wine stops in the Wachau and only beautiful areas. A few kilometers of cycle paths, close to main traffic arteries, did not meet with my admiration.
From Krems we first drove upstream back to Spitz, then took the ferry and drove back to Krems. Difficult to …
