Allee in Detmold

Highlight • Trail

In 1800, Princess Pauline, after examining the building trades of the time, determined "that nowhere was construction slower, more expensive and less good than in Detmold". The government councilor at the time, Johann v. meen Under his supervision and based on a draft by the Chamber Council J.C. Gerke began building the house at Allee 1 in March 1818 as a counterpart to the Neustadt, which had existed on the other side of the Friedrichstal Canal for around 100 years. Instead of supporting the builder with money, as is usual, another way of financing was chosen to relieve the government coffers: 2000 tickets were issued at 5 thalers each, the main prize was the house. The building, which was completed in the spring of 1819, was won by farmer Noltemeyer from Bremke, who did not move into it, but sold it to the Antze council for 5,500 thalers.

View of the Externsteine

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Externsteine are worth a visit at any time of the year. They were my playground 40 years ago, less than 15 minutes from home. In winter we could go ice skating here and in summer we built tippis in the forest and looked for fire salamanders

Great railroad bike path that leads through the middle of nature. Despite the loose surface, it is very easy to drive.

In the September sun, the castle is a great sight. The enclosed flower paradise does the rest.

In 1994 the state horticultural show took place here, and even today the castle with its park and the beautiful and well-tended plants is always worth a visit.

Birkendamm Cycle Path

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Bicycle infrastructure failure using the example:

In the eastern part of Birkendamm
- mangy paving stones,
- much too narrow for cyclists of different speeds, as well as oncoming cyclists and pedestrians who often walk here with dogs and in groups,
- bumps caused by roots of the birch trees growing directly along the route,

in the western part
- not a continuous cycle route, but piecemeal,
- no priority of the “Veloroute” over cross traffic (as in the eastern part),
- A mish-mash of different floor coverings and roadway widths
- in some cases there isn't even a designated cycle path, just shared use of the sidewalkless street.

The former tram route required less side space than a bi-directional pedestrian/cycle path does now.
And actually this should be part of a bike route - what's with pedestrians?

So: You should have driven the Birkendamm for historical reasons. But something else is great.

August 10, 2024,🚵 Senneradweg 🏞️
We started with Heiko at Neuhaus Castle 🏰, into the Senne through blooming heath. Past the local history center in Bentlage with old buildings 🏘️ to the next station Emsquelle. Continue past the Hermannsdenkmal within sight, towards Externsteine ⛰️ then always downhill, to Bad Lippspringe and to the Lippequelle. From there back towards Paderborn, Neuhaus Castle. A great cycle path …

Today I drove to Schloss Neuhaus Paderborn. From there I went on the Senneradweg. I drove through the Teutoburg Forest. Visited the external stones and the Emsquellen

A varied route, from good cycle paths along major roads to gravel tracks in the forest.

A bike ride for six people was planned for this Saturday. Our meeting point was the Augustdorf Forest Cemetery, a good 100 kilometers from home. We first rode the European Cycle Route R1 and after about 6 kilometers switched to the Senne Cycle Route. Along the way, we could see the Hermann Monument in the distance. After a few meters …

Unfortunately, this tour is not suitable for racing bikes. Sections with pebbles and forest floor.
The Sennerad logo was missing in places 🙈 which was great if you want to follow signs.
It's better to download the tour and go to Komoot.
It was worth a try 😁😁.
Other than that, it was a nice tour.

On what will probably be the last longer tour this year, we head to the Sene in the best weather. Instead of going to Hercules to Hermann. 😉 Externsteine are always impressive.

It was a lovely ride in the sunshine 🌞. Only one of the wild horses was visible. I could still make out a few in the forest based on their movements.
