Pinnekensweier Pond and Wet Heathland

In a not so distant past there were a whole series of fens on Gerhagen. The Pinnekenswijer was for some time the only fen that was recognizable as such. The natural quality of the fen and its surroundings has deteriorated sharply in recent decades, with desiccation of the fen environment being an important factor. That is why the moist heathland around the Pinnekenswijer is being restored. In the spring of 2021, the heath was scraped down to historic ground level and all ditches were filled in so that the rainwater that feeds the fen remains in the fen for longer and at a higher level.
