Dodendraad Border Crossing Monument

Highlight • Monument

The Wire, also called Dead Wire or Death Gate, was a 332-kilometre long wire barrier built by the German occupiers of Belgium along the border between occupied Belgium and the neutral Netherlands during World War I. In German documents the barrier was officially referred to as Grenzhochspannungshindernis. The barrier was under deadly electrical voltage and was supposed to prevent war volunteers and German deserters from fleeing Belgium. The fencing was also intended to prevent espionage messages from occupied territory from reaching Allied espionage services via the Netherlands and to stop smuggling. The Wire is estimated to have killed many hundreds of people, but could not prevent thousands of people from crossing the border in various ways. After the war, the death gate was quickly demolished.

At the former De Klinge station, the Klingspoor project was completed in 2019 with the opening of a tourist learning and experience center dedicated to nature, clogs, the border and the railway. Interesting to watch.

St. Willibrord Basilica

Highlight • Religious Site

Hulst's skyline is dominated by the monumental basilica, which stands in the heart of the fortified city, built in Brabant Gothic style. The 60 meter high tower is visible from miles away. Located on the highest part of Hulst, the basilica towers above the fortified city, as it were.
The construction of this church was already started in the 13th century. Major expansions were realized in the following centuries. Over the centuries, the church has been rebuilt several times after several devastating tower fires. Famous master builders were involved in this. The current tower dates from four different periods. The originally Catholic church has known many different users. From 1806 it was even a simultaneous church. In 1929 the Catholics bought the Protestant part, after which an extensive restoration took place. The architectural additions increased the Catholic character and partly for this reason the church was elevated to a basilica in 1935.

Hulst Town Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

The town hall (Grote Markt 21) is a building clad in Ledesteen with a landing and a slender corner tower of five sections, which merges into an octagonal brick lantern with a wooden crown. The first town hall, dating from 1455, burned down in 1485.

Rebuilding followed in 1528-'34 according to plans by Laurens Keldermans and stonemason Willem van Sassen. At the rear, against the belfry-like tower built in 1538-'40, the meat hall arose, which was later used as a weighing house (now the VVV).

In 1797 the town hall turned out to be dilapidated and in 1806 the openwork stone tower crown was demolished. In 1830-39 the building served as barracks.

Restoration and austerity followed in 1844-46. The walls were lowered and the Gothic sculptures removed.

The Doric entrance gate and the brick tower lantern date from that time. The hard stone coats of arms of Hulst and Flanders (1663) come from the tower of the St. Willibrordus Church, which was destroyed by fire in 1876.

The town hall was restored in 1949-51 under the direction of G.M. Sturm and H. de Lussanet de la Sablonière.

The new wooden tower crown was designed by E.A.

Canneman.

In the tower there is a room with a star vault and a cachot recovered during the restoration. In the council chamber there are several portraits of princes from the house of Van Nassau and a painting of Hulst fortress from 1628 by Cornelis de Vos.

Here is also the Burgerhuys clock (1643), cast by Johannes Burgerhuys. The old main guard next to the town hall was replaced in 1873 by a school.

This was demolished in 1989 for the construction of the new municipal office.
