Remnant of the Oud-Antwerp exhibition of 1894, re-erected here in 1898. Neo-traditional, octagonal pagadder tower, built of brick and natural stone under a slate spire; connected by a stepped and cemented pointed arch (4 steps and diagonal top piece with crowning lion) to a small round tower, also cemented. The lion carries a coat of arms with the year 1898 (re-erected) and the initials VMV (Victor Merckx-Verellen). The rural house with vague neo-traditional reminiscences, which is built against the whole, was built as a "country house" on the site of an old barn, based on a design by architect J. Goeyvaerts from 1927.

Buitenland hamlet

Highlight • Settlement

Not far from home and yet experience a foreign feeling.
Nice special houses and only one street in Buitenland create a cozy atmosphere.
On sunny days it can be quite busy here. Parking is possible at the dike. Please note, parking spaces are limited. If all places are occupied, you can continue to the Mobilhome parking a little further away.

Derde Reek - Spierbroek Nature Reserve

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

The Derde Reek is a walking path right through the Spierbroek. This 25 hectare nature reserve is an important link in the ecological network around the Scheldt estuary. The nature reserve is home to some striking animal species, such as roe deer, polecats, foxes and stoats.
Spierbroek is one of Klein Brabant's top nature reserves and is definitely worth a visit, except during the breeding season.
The breeding season runs from April 1 to July 30.
Enjoy the swamp forests and swamps. Forest management is currently in full swing.
Gradually, the remaining poplars in the area will be replaced by a natural forest with swamp vegetation.
This nature reserve is in good hands.
Would you like to visit Spierbroek? Boots or sturdy (waterproof) footwear are recommended.

Hingenewiel

Highlight • Lake

The wheel is privately owned, but you walk right past it (on the Victor De Witstraat). No one knows for sure how the Hingenewiel was formed. We know that the Spierenbroek flooded around 1552. After failed attempts to close the Spierenbroekgat, the other polders flooded in November 1554, because the pladderdijk broke. We suspect that this is how the Hingenewiel was formed. A pladderdijk is a cross dike that runs from the stream through the polder (so not along the river). This large wheel was originally even larger, probably the Ketelwiel used to be part of this wheel. In the middle of this wheel was an island with a tower on it. The Hingenewiel became smaller due to natural silting up. Kingfisher, grebe, coot, moorhen, gadwall and shelduck breed here, among other things. But you can also admire fire damselfly, ostrich fern and yellow water lily here.
