Café Den Aard

Highlight • Cafe

This café with a wonderful terrace (and the view to match) is located at the starting point, which is also the end point of this route - so you have the choice of whether you want to strengthen yourself or relax.

The café is named after the district of Aard in the municipality of Wichelen, in which you are located. Alternatively, you could also visit Cafés Scheldebries. From both locations you look out over the Meersen and landscape artist Will Beckers' work Voyager, a metal and wood installation in the shape of a heart.

Salicetum

Highlight • Monument

In 2012, the Verbeke Foundation organized a project with temporary and permanent ecological art along the Scheldt. A holdover from this festival: Salicetum by Will Beckers. The name comes from the botanical name of the willow: Salix.

To do this, he has intertwined around a thousand living willow branches: an ode to the willow, which has been associated with the region for centuries. The artwork becomes more and more impressive as it ages.
He also created the heart-shaped sculpture in the small square in Aard.

Ring dike

Highlight • Structure

Constant dripping wears away the stone, but masses of water tear away said stones. And not just them. Therefore, part of modern flood management is to identify areas that may be flooded.

Such a controlled flood area has been part of the Kalkense Meersen with a new, impressive ring dike since 2015.
Weekend houses, fields and loose wooded areas gave way to an open lake landscape and a large wooded area. The icing on the cake is the beautiful view from the ring dike.

The area inside the ring dike is estimated to be flooded once every 50 years to intercept the waters of the Scheldt.

Kalkense Meadows

Highlight • Natural

The Kalkense Meersen is a vast nature reserve in East Flanders, located between the municipalities of Wetteren, Berlare, Laarne and Wichelen. The area covers approximately one thousand hectares and consists of grasslands, ditches, mudflats, salt marshes and ponds. The Meersen are known for their rich biodiversity and provide a habitat for numerous native animal species, including foxes, deer and stoats. In addition, it is a paradise for bird watchers, with more than 170 bird species spotted. The area is ideal for nature lovers and hikers who want to enjoy peace and beautiful landscapes.

The viewing platform, strategically located at the intersection of the four municipalities that form the Kalkense Meersen, not only offers stunning views of the green landscape and the old Scheldt arm, but also allows visitors to observe the landscape's evolution over the years. According to Michaël Crapoen of Natuurpunt Scheldeland, the platform is a real asset because it offers the opportunity to experience nature from a different perspective. In addition, numerous recreational cycling and walking routes converge here.

’t Meersenhof Farm

Highlight • Structure

Some farmers have given up their farms due to the so-called Sigma Plan, which designated the Meersen as a floodplain.

Nevertheless, there are still farm animals such as the eponymous Galloway cattle. They keep the grass on the dike short and trample the earth. Without them, the Sigmaplan would not work at all, they are important landscape architects, so to speak.

In the winter, the fluffy Galloway cattle come here to this farm to hibernate.
