Bonhomme de Fer Geodetic Marker

Highlight • Monument

The Bonhomme de Fer (the Iron Guy) may be overlooked by modern computing systems, but he remains a witness to our history and to the inventiveness of our ancestors. In the 19th century, with its 85 culmination points (including the hill of the Lion of Waterloo, the belfry of Mons, etc.), he contributed to the drawing of the map of Belgium using trigonometry.

The geodesic reference point, popularly known as the 'Bonhomme de fer' (the little iron guy), is located at the southern end of the forest of La Houssière. After helping to draw up the map of Belgium, it still served for the precise calculation of latitude and longitude, altitude, gravity…

Tramway Path

Highlight • Trail

At the end of the 19th century, the Belgian State decided to allow the creation of local railway lines granted to private individuals. These lines had to meet certain criteria, in particular radius of curvature, slope, metric gauge,... Here, the vicinal connected the station of Braine-le-Comte of the "big railway" to the vicinal station of Planois via the Coulette stops, Coraimont, Houssière, Marouset, Mon Plaisir, Rond Bonnet. Dismantled during the 1914-1918 war, it was rebuilt in 1922, and finally dismantled by the Nazi occupiers in 1942. It will never be restored.
From Planois, you could reach the Rebecq railway station, in particular via the Hénuères railway station, as well as Bois Seigneur Isaac (connections to Nivelles-Nord or Braine l'Alleud).

A fantastic walk in this majestic forest, starting from a parking lot in Braine-le-Comte. You immediately enter the forest, briefly pass through a village, and then back through it to the starting point. Mostly on forest paths, a good 2km of paved roads. During the section through the fens, I left the original route to play on the black trails, …
