McLaughlin Eastshore State Park is a 8.5 miles (13.7 km) long state park and wildlife refuge along the San Francisco Bay shoreline of the East Bay between the cities of Richmond, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, and Oakland. It encompasses remnant natural wetlands, restored wetlands as well as landfill west of the Eastshore Freeway. The East Bay Regional Park District, acting as agent for the State, used funds from the Park District's 1988 Measure AA and state park bonds to acquire the property and clean up contaminated areas at a cost of more than $33 million. It was renamed in October 2012 to honor Save the Bay founder Sylvia McLaughlin (who died, age 99, in 2016). parks.ca.gov/?page_id=520

Berkeley Marina ⛵

Highlight • Structure

The Berkeley Marina is the westernmost portion of the city of Berkeley, California, west of the Eastshore Freeway (Interstate 80 and 580) at the foot of University Avenue on San Francisco Bay. Narrowly speaking, "Berkeley Marina" refers only to the city marina, constructed as the Berkeley Yacht Harbor in the late 1930s, but in common usage it applies to the entire landfill peninsula. The easternmost portion, running parallel to I-80/580, is now a part of the Eastshore State Park komoot.de/highlight/212113
Originally part of the open waters of San Francisco Bay, the shoreline ran a few yards west of the Southern Pacific (now Union Pacific) rail tracks on 3rd Street. The area was gradually filled in. In 1909 the City built a municipal wharf at the foot of University Avenue which was used primarily for freight. Starting in 1926 the Golden Gate Ferry Company began construction of the Berkeley Pier from the foot of University Avenue about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) to reach deeper waters of the Bay for auto ferry service to Hyde Street Pier in San Francisco, shared with the Sausalito ferry. Ferry service ended in 1937, after the 1936 opening of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge. Thereafter it became a fishing pier.
Since about the late 1920s the city municipal dump was located here, and the accumulated garbage and construction debris accounts for most of the dry land of the Berkeley Marina. In the early 1990s much of the former dump was landscaped and converted into "North Waterfront Park", renamed Cesar Chavez Park in 1996 to commemorate the late California labor leader. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Marina

Berkeley’s Shorebird Park Nature Center is the first municipal strawbale building in the United States. It has a solar hot water radiant system to provide heating year-round in the cool marina climate, and a solar photovoltaic electrical system to power the aquariums, computers, lighting and other equipment. The Straw Bale building is the Nature/Visitors Center and Office with a 50 gallon salt tank, a 30 gallon fresh water tank and displays on Marine mammals and birds. The building itself is a display on green building. The Visitors' Center provides information to visitors concerning all areas of recreation and marine conservation and education. ci.berkeley.ca.us/Parks_Rec_Waterfront/Trees_Parks/Shorebird_Nature_Center.aspx

Albany Bulb

Highlight • Natural

The Albany Bulb (also simply known as The Bulb) is a former landfill largely owned by the City of Albany, in California. The Bulb is the west end of a landfill peninsula jutting west from the east shore of San Francisco Bay. The term "Bulb" is often used to refer to the entire peninsula, which includes the Albany Plateau, north of Buchanan Street at its base; the high narrow "Neck," and the round "Bulb." The Bulb is part of the City of Albany, and can be reached via Buchanan Street or the Bay Trail along the east side of San Francisco Bay.
