Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary - Impressive example of neo-Gothic style
The original parish church was built as St. Stephen's Church on the ridge east of the monastery and belonged to the Diocese of Passau. A bit remote for the citizens of Melk, they built a Lady Chapel in the market itself in the 15th century, to which the parish rights were transferred in 1508. Since the parish and the pastor were not subordinate to the Melk monastery and abbot, they were exchanged in 1693. Since then they have been under monastic care and administration.
The Gothic hall church was built in the 15th century, but after a major fire in 1847 it was heavily renovated and re-Gothicized so impressively that the baroque furnishings introduced in the 18th century were removed again. The three-aisled, four-bay church building with the ribbed vault was restored to its original shape and clear style and was also equipped accordingly.
The uniformity of the neo-Gothic furnishings of the altars, the pulpit, the Stations of the Cross reliefs, the choir stalls, the benches and the floor make the parish church a stylish example of the neo-Gothic style from the second half of the 19th century. The rich, carved figural and relief decoration shows the popular patrons against illness, disasters and from the Benedictine order as well as scenes from the lives of Jesus and Mary. Worth mentioning are the many grave monuments on the outside of the church and in particular the exceptionally beautiful Mount of Olives scene. The almost life-size, fully sculptural figures are a special example of the Danube School in Austria from 1502/03, probably from the workshop of the well-known sculptor Kriechbaum.

In 1722, Abbot Berthold Dietmayr donated the Kolomani fountain, which was created in 1687 for the prelate's courtyard of the monastery, to the market. Saint Koloman stands on a column made of four water-spouting dolphins with a staff and pilgrim's hat. The Irish king's son was suspected of being a spy on the pilgrimage to Jerusalem near Stockerau and was hanged on an elderberry bush. The Babenbergs brought his incorrupt corpse to their residence in Melk on October 13, 1014. The Kolomani festival still takes place on this day.
