Bothal Jubilee Stone and War Memorial

Highlight • Monument

The jubilee stone commemorates the diamond jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II (2012).

The Bothal War Memorial is a stone monument consisting of a cairn with a plinth, pedestal, shaft, and cross. The cross features Celtic knotwork design, and two trees were planted nearby - a weeping ash symbolizing the tears of the bereaved and a maple representing the blood of the fallen.

The memorial bears inscriptions on two sides, honoring those who gave their lives in the Great War (World War I) and the World War (World War II). It lists 36 names from World War I and 22 names from World War II. The Bothal War Memorial is classified as Grade II.

Bothal Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

Fantastic views of the Bothal Castle ruin from the village of Bothal (old English for dwelling). Well worth a stop to take in the magnificent castle, though be warned, you're in a bit of a dip, so it's a climb out from both sides.

St. Andrew's Church, Bothal

Highlight • Religious Site

The Church of St. Andrew's in Bothal is a historic building with a rich architectural history. Constructed between the 12th and 15th centuries, with Victorian additions, the church features notable elements such as a 15th-century nave roof, medieval stained glass, carved stone heads, grave slabs, and the alabaster Ogle Tomb. Located near Bothal Castle, the church replaced an earlier Anglo-Saxon structure during the late 12th century. Notable features include a Norman Piscina, Jacobean altar rails, an Elizabethan communion cup, and a bell turret. The church also has a paticularly lovely cemetery nestled within the trees. The church's blend of architectural styles and historical significance makes it a fascinating destination.

Robin of Pegswood Sculpture

Highlight • Monument

Robin of Pegswood designed to symbolise the area's mining heritage and links to Sherwood Forest in Nottingham.
The piece was created by local artist Tom Maley, whose previous work includes the bronze statue of Newcastle United legend Jackie Milburn on the approach to St James' Park and the unknown bronze soldier at the war memorial in Ashington.
Good marker for Pegswood turn where there is a co-op store if needed
