Fortrose Cathedral Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

Standing in a grassy square at the heart of Fortrose, the atmospheric ruins of Fortrose Cathedral date back to the 1300s, although the diocese of Ross is thought to have existed since around 700.

Only a small portion of the original building still stands, but the delicate stone vaulting and remains of some window tracery are still clearly visible.

One of the most beautiful and welcoming churches I know. Additionally the little point to rest is nice too.

Chanonry Lighthouse

Highlight • Viewpoint

Chanonry Lighthouse has guided boats since 1846 and is still in operation today. It's located on the Black Isle where the Moray Firth narrows between Chanonry Point and Fort George. At the time, the lighthouse cost £3,570 to construct. The lights range is visible for 15 nautical miles (24 km).

We had one of the best experiences of our Scotland stay here. Not only some seals, but 6 dolphins with young hunted here for salmon during the incoming tide, only about 20m from the shore. With many other enthusiasts we watched almost 2 hours of this spectacle. We came to this point because we had a tip, so there seems to be more often lucky.

First part of the Fortrose tour. Unfortunately, Komoot cut off the second part of "Faery Glen". That's why it's extra. Taken together, the tour was one of the highlights for me.

Once around the Fortrose headland. Start is at the impressive remains of the cathedral. The path leads over paved roads down to the water's edge. From there it goes …
