Rubjerg Knude Summit

Highlight • Summit

The cliff coast between Lønstrup and Løkken is formed over a distance of approximately 15 km by glacial sand deposits up to 50 m high above sea level. Erosion erodes these deposits at a rate of several meters per year, forming a cliff known as Lønstrup Klint with an offshore sandy beach of varying width.

Rubjerg Knude forms the highest point of the Lønstrup cliffs.
It reaches a length of up to 1,900 m and a width of up to 400 m.
Rubjerg Knude itself is a good 70 m high. The upper 20 to 25 m
are composed of drifting sand. Below this lies a cliff up to 50 m high,
built from glacial deposits, with an example of isostatically imbricated floes that is unique in Denmark.

The dune stretches north-south and drops steeply towards the sea.
In addition to the 50 m of coastal cliff, the wind has piled up another 50 m of sand, which had been loosened by erosion, over the past decades, making it
one of the largest shifting dunes in Europe, reaching up to 100 m in height.

The largest shifting dune in Europe is the Dune du Pyla in France.

View of Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse

Highlight • Viewpoint

The whole place is absolutely unreal. You can see the remains of the weathered houses around the light tower, the dune looks like a cold desert.
The view is great, the way there better or worse depending on the path. My favorite is when you walk from the parking lot to the dunes at right angles and then fight and climb on the dunes to the lighthouse, preferably close to the steep cliff, which at this point m.W. is highest.

There are always fierce disputes between the affected owners and the Danish nature conservation authority, which is usually committed to the free play of (natural) forces.

Lønstrup Beach

Highlight • Beach

Lønstrup has a beautiful sandy beach with good bathing conditions, as there are calm lagoons with low water levels between the wave breakers. You are not allowed to drive on the beach in Lønstrup, but there are good parking conditions just a few meters from the beach. At the foot of the cliff, small dunes have formed, where you can relax after a fresh sea bath. To the north of the boat place (harbor) there is a large stretch of beach, where a few white bathhouses and often a few fishing boats form a beautiful backdrop. To the south of the boat area there is a good bathing beach approx. 500 meters long along the breakwater. Lønstrup has the white bathing water flag, which indicates good bathing conditions.

This popular hiking trail leads to the Rubjerg Knude migrating dune. The lighthouse dates back to 1900 and was relocated 70 meters inland in 2019. Remains of the cemetery of Marup Church are still preserved.
Forest and heathland surround the dune. Both are buried under sand, with no escape.
For small children, the path from the nearest parking lot is …

On the way back along the beach there is a place where the surf comes down to the foot of the cliff. Here you may have to take off your shoes and walk through the water.
