The cliff coast between Lønstrup and Løkken is formed over a distance of approximately 15 km by glacial sand deposits up to 50 m high above sea level. Erosion erodes these deposits at a rate of several meters per year, forming a cliff known as Lønstrup Klint with an offshore sandy beach of varying width.

Rubjerg Knude forms the highest point of the Lønstrup cliffs.
It reaches a length of up to 1,900 m and a width of up to 400 m.
Rubjerg Knude itself is a good 70 m high. The upper 20 to 25 m
are composed of drifting sand. Below this lies a cliff up to 50 m high,
built from glacial deposits, with an example of isostatically imbricated floes that is unique in Denmark.

The dune stretches north-south and drops steeply towards the sea.
In addition to the 50 m of coastal cliff, the wind has piled up another 50 m of sand, which had been loosened by erosion, over the past decades, making it
one of the largest shifting dunes in Europe, reaching up to 100 m in height.

This popular hiking trail leads to the Rubjerg Knude migrating dune. The lighthouse dates back to 1900 and was relocated 70 meters inland in 2019. Remains of the cemetery of Marup Church are still preserved.
Forest and heathland surround the dune. Both are buried under sand, with no escape.
