Crail: Tolbooth and Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

Parts of Crail’s Tolbooth and Town Hall building date back to the late 16th century. It is nowadays A-listed and used for various events. It can be found at the junction of Marketgate.

Rock Formation on the Coast

Highlight • Viewpoint

Not a peaceful place, geologically anyway. Evidence of huge disruptions in the past litter the coastline

Crail Airfield Pillbox, Fife Ness

Highlight • Monument

The most easterly point of Fife is a rocky outcrop with dangerous rocks offshore. A series of light ships were used here as it proved impossible to build a lighthouse on the rocks out at sea. Eventually the land-based lighthouse was built in 1975.
There was also a coastguard station here until 2012.
The headland was an important strategic position as a look out in the world wars, a pill box remains from the defence built then.
Fife Ness makes a great destination on a coastal walk from Crail or Kingsbarns. The coastal paths are wild and the sea is impressive along here. Keep an eye out for sea birds. Whale, dolphin and seals have also been spotted swimming in the North Sea from this area.

Freeness Harbour Stone Beacon Remains

Highlight • Historical Site

Best laid plans of mice & men - efforts to build a stone beacon here (to protect ships sailing close to the North Carr Rocks) were dashed when a storm washed away the almost completed stone beacon after five years of construction.

The most North East Corner of Fife, looking out over the North Sea. The Crail Golfing Society Club House also makes for a good coffee stop, and there are some interesting walks out along the Coastal Path.
