Skipness Castle

Highlight • Historical Site

Skipness castle is a square courtyard castle built in the early 13th century by the MacSween family. It was used as a stronghold against the vikings. The Macdonald Lord of the Isles held the castle until 1493 and it went to the Forresters. In 1499 it was turned over to The Campbell Earl of Argyll. The castle was abandoned in the 17th century. There is a chapel dedicated to Saint Brendan to the southeast of the castle. The castle is said to be haunted by the Green Lady of Skipness Castle. Rather than causing fear in the residents, the ghost was held in high regard as protector of the castle for hundreds of years.

The castle is free to visit at all times of the year. However the tower is open from April 1st to 30th September between 0930-1730. For more information, visit: historicenvironment.scot/visit-a-place/places/skipness-castle-and-chapel. To visit the castle head down the lane coming off of the road where this highlight is located.

The Seafood Cabin

Highlight • Cafe

The coast road ride, and hot/cold seafood and drinks offering at Skipness Cabin are well worth the short detour. If there early, grab a coffee and a hot-smoked salmon roll; if late a full on seafood platter and chowder :) The salmon and scallops are so so good.

There's also a little Skipness Smokehouse store which stocks a load of local packed seafood >> perfect to stash on your bike for snacks and meals...

Skipness Castle

Highlight • Historical Site

Skipness Castle is a striking medieval fortification that was built in the early 13th century by the MacSween family. The Green Lady of Skipness Castle is said to haunt the location. However, far from causing fear to residents, the ghost has protected the castle for hundreds of years. One story recounts how the ghost cast a state of confusion over an attacking enemy, forcing them to retreat. The castle, which is a scheduled ancient monument, is free to visit at all times of year. The tower, however, is open 1 April to 30 September between 9.30am-5.30pm. For more information, visit: historicenvironment.scot/visit-a-place/places/skipness-castle-and-chapel.
