Ribble Estuary

After its long journey from the magnificent heart of the Yorkshire Dales, the Ribble empties into the Irish Sea just to the west of Preston.

It is one of Britain's most important estuaries for waders. Oystercatchers, grey plover, knot, sanderling, dunlin and black-tailed godwit are amongst the species that can be spotted. At high tide, the seawall at Fairhaven Lake is a good place to observe the birds.
