Windsor Pavement Clock

Highlight • Monument

In the 1950's, a pavement clock was installed near here, by the jeweller and clockmaker Sir Cyril Dyson (clockmaker for the Queen), just outside his business. That clock received considerable attention over the years, but was removed sometime in the mid-to-late 1980s, "for maintenance". and its whereabouts are no longer known. A newspaper article published to document the installation of the replacement pavement clock indicated Cllr Rayner, (a lead member for highways and street care in Windsor and Maidenhead), said: "the whereabouts of the original clock is unknown".

The pavement clock was not replaced until 28 January 2011. On that date, a replacement clock was unveiled by Mayor Cllr Catherine Bursnall at an official ceremony, when it was also announced that a TIME CAPSULE had been placed under the replacement clock, and to quote, Cllr Rayner said: "In 50 years' time when they have to maintain the clock for the first time they'll see what Windsor life was like in 2010 and 2011."

It is thought that the pavement clock is the only one in Britain.

Windsor Guildhall

Highlight • Monument

The Windsor Guildhall is the town hall of the town of Windsor, in the English county of Berkshire. It is situated in the High Street, about 100 metres from Castle Hill, which leads to the main public entrance to Windsor Castle. It is a Grade I listed building.
The Borough of Windsor possessed a guildhall from early times. A deed of 1369, now in the possession of Eton College, refers to the "gildaule", and a charter of 1439 states that "pleas happening in the said borough...shall be pleaded and holden in the Guildhall there, before the mayor and bailiffs for the time being". Norden's map of 1607 shows a market house in the location of the present Guildhall: the main part of it is raised on wooden pillars to allow the space beneath to be used as a covered corn market.

A royal residence, Windsor Castle is a world famous, iconic building. Whilst the castle itself is extraordinary and well worth visiting, the view from the back gates is truly phenomenal. Windsor Great Park begins here and encompasses 4,992 acres (2,020 ha) of exquisite grounds.

From the castle's back gates, the Long Walk begins, stretching south into the Great Park. Gazing down its 3-mile span (4.8 km) is quite an experience.
