Castle Howard Gatehouse (The Temperance Hotel)

Highlight • Monument

The original Gate House, with its famous pyramid, was built in 1719 by Sir John Vanbrugh, the architect who designed Castle Howard itself. Its flanking wings plus building were built in the 1750s, at which time it was referred to as The New Inn and served people journeying from York to Castle Howard and the Vale of Pickering. By the 1850s, the Gate House had become an inn and an hotel. By the late 19th century, it was developed into The Temperance Hotel, where the ninth Countess of Carlisle would accommodate women and children from the industrial belt of the North to help them to escape "urban drudgery".

An interesting folly (pretending to be medieval) and a tower within the Castle Howard grounds. These are mock fortifications - fascinating! There are great views from here towards the village of Welburn.

The Pyramid at Castle Howard

Welcome to Egypt!... Ok, not quite, but it's a very unusual sight to be sure in the middle of North Yorkshire!

One of the many wonders and oddities in the Castle Howard grounds, this one was built in 1728, and it is surrounded by four pairs of piers. Easy to walk up to and admire from up close!

New River Bridge, Castle Howard Estate

New River Bridge is part of the Castle Howard Estate. It's quite striking how the grassy track runs over it. The Mausoleum is right next to it, as is The Temple of Four Winds (yes, it can be very windy here!).

Coneysthorpe Bank and Centenary Way — view of Castle Howard

This is a fantastic bit on the Centenary Way long-distance trail. Walking south, first you will enjoy the peace and quiet of the woodlands of Coneysthorpe Bank, and then, once you have emerged from the trees, fantastic views of Castle Howard in the distance over the green and pleasant countryside here. Lovely - food for the soul!

Thurtle Wood Forest Trail

It's good to, on occasion, disappear in the woods! This is a good way to do that: it's a pleasant track through Thurtle Wood (a wide, very easy forest track). Some logging here and there, but not too much.

Eventually, walking north, you will emerge onto more of an open space (Hall Moor) with the wood to your left (west). If you want to be "away from it all", here, you got it.

Birkdale Farm

This is a lovely fishing lake right next to Birkdale Farm. It certainly offers a sense of peace and solitude here, in the lovely setting of the surrounding woodlands and hills. There is a boating hut on the bank, plenty of easy spaces for a picnic and space for parking nearby.

If you would like to fish, one can hire fishing rods from the farm.
