View from Larpool Viaduct

Highlight • Viewpoint

Also known as the Esk Valley Viaduct, the Larpool Viaduct's 13 arches carry the Scarborough & Whitby Railway over the River Esk. Stunning views from the top!

Cock Mill Wood

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The ride through Cock Mill Wood, which is also part of the Scarborough-to-Whitby Cinder Trail, is pure cycling joy - a smooth and wide track that cuts through this rich woodland.

This track used to be a railway line - opened in 1885 and subsequently closed in 1965. During the summer months, a cooling shade offered by the trees can be profoundly welcome! Keep an eye out for the horses and ponies grazing in the fields as you whizz past!

Brick Archway on the Cinder Track

Highlight • Structure

Repairs are being made further down the track.
We came off just before the closure sign down the stairs which brings you to the tunnel. Not snowing exactly where we were we made it across the field to the made road. We rode into Whitby by road and following the route for the Abbey. This brings you to the Harbour where you can cross the old bridge to the other side

Sandy Toes Cafe Trust Box

Highlight • Cafe

Great little trust box cake stall on the Cinder Track. Homemade cakes, drinks and much more. We can personally recommend the flapjack it's yum 😋.

6.63 km

A very nice track, suitable for gravel bikes but maybe more comfortable on MTB. It's a very long hill but be cautious and do not road test a new bike you have built on it all the way down and then immediately snap your chain and realise you haven't brought any spare links or the tool. If you do do that, it's a long 8 mile push back to the top, but very scenic.

Robin Hood's Bay Village

Highlight • Historical Site

The village, which consists of a maze of tiny streets, has a tradition of smuggling. Robin Hood’s Bay is reputed to have a network of subterranean passageways linking the houses. It was a hub during the late 18th century, as smuggling was rife on the Yorkshire coast.

Today, it's a busy tourist hub in summer and start of the coast-to-coast walking path. The origin of the village’s name is uncertain, but it is doubtful that Robin Hood was ever in the vicinity of the village.

When taking a detour into the village, be aware that you will have to negotiate a 31% incline on the way back.

Cinder Track: Whitby to Robin Hood's Bay

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

This is the bit of the Cinder Track with the best views. This shared-use path used to be the Scarborough to Whitby railway between 1885 to 1965, but now it's a popular semi-off-road, traffic-free route. Having a bell on your bike is advisable!
