Here you can reach us via the "Alte Fahrt" (former Dortmund-Ems Canal).

The Alte Fahrt is a disused branch of the Dortmund-Ems Canal. With the growing ship traffic on the canal, various side arms had to be built as early as 1929, just 30 years after it was opened. Larger ships in particular were able to use side arms of the canal and thus avoid each other. Many years later the main canal was widened at the crucial points and the so-called second voyages were dismantled or separated from the main canal. Many of the former tributaries are now closed biotopes and invite you to go on discovery tours on foot or by bike.

Halterner Reservoir

Highlight • Lake

... a worthwhile destination, cycling around the lake is also recommended. Especially the north side (one side of the forest, the other with a view of the lake) invites you to linger with numerous benches ... The south side is always quite busy on weekends. . .

Halterner Reservoir

Highlight • Lake

Great starting point for a walk around the lake. It's the largest drinking water extraction facility, which is why swimming is prohibited everywhere.

September 7, 2025,Wesel-Datteln-Kanal – Alte Fahrt (Datteln–Olfen) Runde von Haltern am See
Today we're heading along the water. First, Lake Haltern, then the canal. A bit of the Do-Ems Canal, the old ford, and finally the Stever. Then back across the country to Haltern.

Beautiful, varied route first on the Wesel-Datteln Canal, then on the Altefahrt and later a great route always away from the main roads 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Start at the Hoher Niemen campsite and from there to the shad ferry across the Lippe. The recording of the lap only begins there

Nice tour of holders after Olfen to eat ice cream.
Super summer weather, delicious ice cream, a lot of dust is all it takes. Another beautiful day.

The 4th stage of the Steverland route leads from Olfen to the Dreibogenbrücke and into the Steverauen. The path around the Hullerner and Halterner reservoirs goes past the Füchtelner Mühle with our join-in station “Aktuelstromtisch”. While the Hullerner reservoir is rather quiet and you can almost feel Swedish, the Halterner reservoir offers a wide range of leisure activities for variety. …

August 2, 2022,Nach Haltern am See
Today we drove this whole tour in the best weather, there was something of everything, on Lake Haltner, on the railway line and along the canal and through the beautiful landscape. The stop after so many km was really deserved. We had kohldampf. The possibility to stop and the tour is really recommended. During the week, the tour is easy …

A very relaxing tour through the Münsterland region. From Olfen to Haltern am See and back to Olfen. Plenty of greenery, plenty of water, and, for the most part, a very quiet 🦻 tour.

At reservoirs, Lippe and canals from and to Olfen.
On this bike-friendly route we experienced beautiful views over the Halterner and Hullern reservoirs.
This route leads comfortably along several canals, far away from traffic, you come across the idyllic Lippe several times and follow a section of the beautiful Alte Fahrt with a magnificent canal bridge over the Lippe.

Highly recommended tour. Tip: don't go on the weekend if you want to operate the ferry yourself. We were alone today. I can well imagine that it would be very busy otherwise on the paths and on the ferry.
