Grindley Brook Locks

Highlight • Structure

Grindley Brook is a little village just outside Whitchurch on the border of Shropshire, Cheshire and Wales. It's home to six canal locks, three of which form a staircase that lowers the canal (or raises it, depending on which way you're going!).

If you're lucky enough to visit when boats are going up or down the staircase, it's worth while hanging around to watch them complete the logistical challenge.

St Alkmund's Church, Whitchurch

St Alkmund’s Church is a captivating Grade I-listed building. Founded in 912 AD, the church was initially built of white stone, which is why the town is called Whitechurch. However, in 1711 the tower collapsed and had to be rebuilt in red sandstone ashlar, which is why the ‘white church’ looks a little redder than you might expect.
