Holyhead Harbour

Highlight • Structure

The port of Holyhead is a major port for both fishing vessels and commercial passenger ships. From here, you can catch ferries to Ireland.

It's a lovely place to explore, with smaller boats bobbing on their moorings with the huge passenger liners coming and going, but you can climb the hill behind – Holyhead Mountain – to see a fantastic overview of the harbour.

Holyhead Breakwater Country Park is often used as a starting point for a hike up Holyhead Mountain or for coastal walks in the area. The park is situated on the site of an old stone quarry that once provided the raw materials that built Holyhead Breakwater, Europe's longest. Wildlife that can be spotted from here includes peregrine falcons, the world's fastest fliers.
