Museums in the Schranne

Highlight • Historical Site

The Bad Königshofen im Grabfeld Archaeological Museum is an archaeological museum in Bad Königshofen in the Rhön-Grabfeld district of Lower Franconia. The museum is a branch of the Munich State Archaeological Collection. The museum was established in 1988 in the Alte Schranne, a former granary of the Bishopric of Würzburg dating back to 1693. The museum is supported by the Munich State Archaeological Collection, which also provides scientific curation for the exhibits.

Since 2006, the Museum for Border Crossers has been located in the rear building. Between June 2017 and May 2019, the building was extensively renovated and technically upgraded, and reopened with a completely revised exhibition. Since the renovation until 2019, both museums have been structurally linked by an intermediate wing and thematically linked by the theme of "borders."

On October 1, 1911, the youngest fountain on Bad Königshofen's market square, the Luitpold Fountain, was inaugurated. It features a vase-like fountain bowl with a bulbous fountain stem, adorned with lion heads. Above it is a base with coats of arms-bearing putti and a baluster column with a figure of the Reaper, limestone and bronze, by Balthasar Schmitt (1858–1942), 1911.

Market Square, Bad Königshofen

Highlight • Settlement

The focal point of Bad Königshofen is the large market square with its three ornamental fountains: the Luitpold Fountain under the linden tree, the Röhrenbrunnen (Tube Fountain), and the Michaelsbrunnen (Michael Fountain), above which the wrought-iron angel "floats." The Vierröhrenbrunnen (Four-Tube Fountain) in front of the Schlundhaus (Thrush House) was fed by a water pipe even before the Thirty Years' War, making it an important part of the town. Also located on the market square is the medieval Kornstein (cornstone) from 1525, which formerly served as a grain measuring device.

Kleinbardorf Moated Castle

Highlight • Castle

The rectangular main building is kept simple, but is enlivened in the north by a strong, four-story stair tower with a tail dome. The main portal is to the left of the stair tower, which is accessible through its own entrance. Both portals are architecturally richly structured and have tablets with building inscriptions (16th century). The alliance coat of arms of the married couple Heinrich von Bibra and Veronika von Erthal is carved into the tower portal. Eight ancestral coats of arms of the couple flank the words:

“ANNO DOMINI 1590
GOD THE HER BEHVTE DIS HAVS
EVERYONE INSIDE GO IN AND AVS
HEINRICH VON VND ZV BIBRA
KLEINBARDORF VND SCHWEBHEIM”
