Garfiun Trail, Klosters

Highlight • Trail

The trail between the charming Walser settlement of Monbiel near Klosters and Alp Garfiun is an insider tip. It leads slightly uphill along the rushing Landquart to Alp Novai. There, a wonderful additional loop awaits you on an open, snowy area. Our recommendation: Treat yourself to a break in the alpine hut - the barley soup and the blueberry crumble cake are a poem. You have more than earned the break and refreshments, because between the starting point and Alp Garfiun you have to conquer 260 meters in altitude.

Garfiun Roller Coaster

Highlight • Trail

To the east of Klosters, on the banks of the Landquart, the starting point is at the old Bundelti schoolhouse. You can park your car in the parking lot on the street right next to it. Directly next to the parking lot is the entrance to the 11.8 kilometer long cross-country ski trail for experienced cross-country skiers. You follow the Landquart, which is a tributary of the Rhine, upstream. At first you walk relaxed through the deep snow-covered, picturesque valley floor, then some challenging climbs await you.

After a few pole pushes through the quiet Garfiun forest, which is completely bathed in white, you reach an open clearing where you can relax and let your skis run. The loop at Alp Novai is followed by a climb up to the Alp Garfiun restaurant and then downhill towards Klosters. With a wintry view of the Gotschna area, you drive back down to the starting point at the Bundelti schoolhouse.

Sagenbord suspension bridge, Sagenbord-Monbiel
Sagenbord-Monbiel, suspension bridge in Prättigau above Landquart
This suspension bridge was built by the local heroes Crestageo AG, a construction company based in Chur that specializes in the construction of suspension bridges, among other things. The 44-meter suspension bridge consists of 2 suspension cables with a suspended wooden walkway. This walking surface is covered with a wire mesh so that there is less risk of slipping when it is wet or icy. On the south side, the suspension cables are stretched over a 5-meter-high metal pylon, on the north side the suspension cables are anchored directly in the slope behind it, slightly higher up.

Monbiel is the furthest Walser village in Prättigau and serves as a starting point into the Silvretta Mountains. The village center with its many traditional wooden houses is very attractive.

Höhwald Inn

Highlight • Restaurant

Near the forest lies the Gasthaus Höhwald in the small Walser village of Monbiel at 1,300 meters altitude. Social life has always existed in the beautiful Grisons house. Originally in the small business with a shop that supplied the monbielers with the essentials. Since the early 80s in the restaurant, in which one was always heard particularly often: the Jägerlatein! But also actually killed hunting trophies celebrated and celebrate the hunters always with preference in the Höhwald. A tradition that should be maintained: locals and guests should still meet here for a chat.

In the alpine atmosphere of the Höhwald, with a lot of fragrant wood and noble fabrics, warm light, cuddly skins, open fire, hunting trophies and dishes like from Nani's kitchen, you can especially enjoy that. One of the best addresses in the region!

Klosters Night Trail

Highlight • Trail

Cross-country skiing when the moon is high in the sky and the snow glitters in the light of the lanterns - the night trail in Klosters is a special experience. If you don't have time to do your laps during the day or just want to go for a run under the stars, you can do so on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. By the way, Klosters also offers the opportunity to enjoy the entire cross-country trail network with headlamps on Thursday nights.

The entrance to the illuminated night trail is at the Bundelti school building, where you will find a small parking lot and toilets. The three kilometer long route includes short, crisp climbs and some descents, but is also suitable for beginners. You start towards the east and soon cross the snow-covered Landquart River over a bridge. It then curves up and down to Aeuja, where you make a loop and return to the river bank surrounded by glittering snow. Right at the starting point you walk over a small bridge again and are back at the start.

Winter Hike “Monbiel – Alp Garfiun – Klosters”

A winter hike from the old Walser village of Monbiel to the tranquil Alp Garfiun with its cozy mountain inn – an oasis of peace. The trail continues through the enchanting winter landscape along the Lanquart River to Klosters Platz.

The starting point for the winter hike is the Monbiel parking lot bus stop, accessible from Klosters Platz. For a more leisurely experience, you can travel by nostalgic horse-drawn carriage through the magnificent winter scenery to Monbiel, the highest year-round inhabited settlement in the Prättigau region. For a bite to eat beforehand, the Gasthaus Höhwald (+41 81 422 30 45) is recommended.

From the bus stop, follow the marked winter hiking trail, which ascends gently to Alp Pardenn and then on to Alp Garfiun. Shortly before reaching the alpine hut, the trail climbs slightly again. Having arrived at the top of Alp Garfiun (+81 422 13 69), the cozy hut invites you to enjoy delicious alpine dishes and a fantastic mountain panorama.

From Alp Garfiun, the trail descends to the Landquart River and then retraces its steps for a short distance to the fork in the path near Baretschrüti, where you turn left. Cross the Landquart via a bridge. Following the river, you pass through Schwäderloch, where you then follow the road to Äuja and the winter hiking trail. Shortly before Klosters, you cross the Landquart again and then walk through the village center to Klosters Platz train station.
