Moulin des Invalides

Highlight • Other

The Moulin des Invalides is a watermill on the Laquette, located in the city of Aire-sur-la-Lys, part of the French department of Pas-de-Calais. The mill functioned as a flour mill. The mill was built in 1682 for Count De Robelin, who was an engineer for the French king. The builders were soldiers who were no longer fit for military service due to their injuries. In 1790 it was reported that the mill had two paddle wheels, but the current was too weak to turn both wheels. In 1840 the mill was partly rebuilt and enlarged. A winch was also installed to hoist the bags of grain. Mechanization followed in the course of the 19th century and the current building was erected in 1878. Electric propulsion arrived in the 20th century. In 1979 the company was closed down. In 1996 a new water wheel was installed, which had the same diameter of 5.2 meters as in 1790.

Cassel Village

Highlight • Settlement

Cassel is a fortified town on top of a hill and not far from the Belgian border with Poperinge (20 km). Beautiful views, cozy alleys, unique estaminets and a richly furnished museum in a historic mansion. This is in short what Cassel brings you, once you have conquered the slope from whichever side. A lot of variety with a bit of history and culture, a lot of nature and local gastronomy. Enjoyment is the motto. Highlights are there for the taking in Cassel. For some, the Musée de Flandre will be the top attraction, for others the estaminets and still others just come for the cobblestone climb. Enjoy Cassel.

Ramparts of Cassel

Highlight • Historical Site

The Remparts de Cassel are the historic fortifications that surround the charming town of Cassel, perched high on Mont Cassel in French Flanders. These ancient ramparts bear witness to the region’s rich and tumultuous history and offer visitors a fascinating glimpse into the past.
Cassel’s elevated position on Mont Cassel, one of the highest points in the area, made it a strategically important stronghold for a long time. It offered excellent views over the Flemish plain, making it ideal for defensive purposes.
The first fortifications date back to the Middle Ages, when walls and gates were built to protect the town from invasions and sieges. Cassel was often the scene of military confrontations due to its strategic importance.
In the 17th century, the famous French military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban strengthened the fortifications of Cassel. Although not as extensive as his other projects, these improvements helped to strengthen the town.

A pleasant cycling route through the Parc Naturel des Ballastieres.
This former ballast extraction site is now a natural area with a pleasant walking trail a stone's throw from the city. On and around the bodies of water, nature is reclaiming its rights and many species have taken up residence there under the gaze of the Highland cows that maintain the place.
