Romerhuis, Venlo

Highlight • Historical Site

Contrary to what the name suggests, the house name does not go back to "The Romans", but is named after a family.

The Roman House is a well-preserved late Gothic style shop house from around 1490 on the corner of Kwartelenmarkt and Wijngaardstraat in the Dutch Limburg town of Venlo. The building has been a national monument since April 20, 1971.

It is made of brick with stepped gables and small ornamental turrets; the only exceptions are some corner stones on the ground floor and the door frame. There are also remains of half-timbered buildings in the rear part of the Romerhuis. It was restored in the old style by Jules Kayser between 1939 and 1941 and restored in 1950 after war damage.

Named for its founders, it has been owned by the Hendrick de Keyser Association since 1927. The name "Romerhuis" remembers the Venlo magistrate family Romer from the 17th century, not to be confused with the name De Römer, a hamlet on the northwest side of the Blerick district, along the Eindhovenseweg, where there is also a caravan camp of the same Name built in the 1980's has been repealed.

The building is currently used as a shop selling quality coffee, tea and chocolate products.

Huize Schreurs

Highlight • Historical Site

Haus Schreurs (also called Vogelsanck after the putative founders) is a well-preserved early Renaissance-style house at Grote Kerkstraat 19 and 21 in Venlo.

According to the archives of the Municipal Court of Venlo 1351 - 1796 there must have been a Vogelsanck house in the Grote Kerkstraat (at that time still the Kerkstraat; no distinction was made between the Grote and Kleine Kerkstraat). He mentions a farm owned by Jenneskens Vogelsanck.

The house is made entirely of brick in 1588 and in the old style in 1993. In the middle is the coat of arms of the restored Van Oeijen-Boener family. It has two busts in the pediment. A street in Venlo is named after his wife's family.

The property is owned by the Hendrick de Keyser Association. Mayor Johan van Vogelsanck lived in this building.
