Achelse Kluis Abbey

Highlight • Religious Site

The Achelse Kluis is a real highlight. Hermits lived here in the 17th century and cleared the sandy soil. In 1846 the Westmalle Trappists founded a new settlement here, following the strict rules of the Cistercians: prayer, study and silence.
In 1850, King Leopold I granted Achelse Kluis a brewing license. During the First World War, the German occupying forces confiscated the brewery. As a result, beer was no longer brewed until 1998. With the help and knowledge of the Trappist Abbeys of Rochefort, Westmalle and Westvleteren, the abbey then began to brew again.

De Bever Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural

The Domein De Bever in the Warmbeek valley was already an attraction for young and old in the 1960s. But an aggressive intruder threatened to destroy the idyll. Sounds like an alien invasion, but it wasn't that bad - but it was still dangerous.

The Brazilian milfoil (Myriophyllum aquaticum), an invasive exotic species from South America, slowly overran more than half of the water surface, threatening the remaining flora and fauna. In order to give native animals and plants more chances again, the pond and heath landscapes were renatured in 2018 and 2020 to get rid of this exotic species.

On an adventurous adventure trail you can get to know the beautiful nature in this area in a playful way.
