Rinnentor

Highlight • Monument

Still nice to look at today. The landmark of Bensheim until 1885.

"The Rinnentor tower is a remnant of the medieval city fortifications that were built in the 13th and 14th centuries to secure the city of Bensheim. The Rinnentor, it is now assumed, was intended to secure the western outflow of the Lauter out of the city. The Rinnentor originally existed from a middle building with high basket arch openings and key notches in the western wall of the battlement. Today's Rinnentorturm was added to the north, and the security building further south. In the first half of the 18th century, the Lauter was moved to the north and the southern city wall was demolished, in order to create a western exit to the city. In 1885, at the instigation of some citizens, this city gate was demolished except for the current Rinnentor tower. The reasons given were traffic problems (a passage that was too narrow for carriages) and an alleged dilapidation. This gave the city of Bensheim one of its landmarks "A loss that was soon realized and that is still present in the consciousness of many Bensheim citizens today."

Bensheim Market Square

Highlight • Settlement

Bensheim is located on the western slope of the Odenwald, favored by the mild climate of the Bergstrasse. Spring starts earlier here! Discover the hustle and bustle in the beautiful and large pedestrian zone with its numerous shops, street cafes and restaurants. Many artfully restored half-timbered houses have been preserved in the city center. The Walderdorffer Hof is the oldest half-timbered house in southern Hesse and was built in 1395.

The city walls of the old city and the suburbs once ran on both sides of the Winkelbach, each with its own defensive ring. On September 29, 1732, Michael's Day, the bridge was severely damaged by a storm and had to be rebuilt. At that time, the Ernspergers donated two figures, casts of which stand on the bridge today: the bridge saints Johannes von Nepomuk and Franziskus Xaverius.
