The cathedral is the mother church of the diocese of Crema. The site on which it stands is very ancient: after a small church of S. Maria della Mosa, in the second half of the century. In the 11th century, a basilica-type cathedral was built, destroyed by Barbarossa when he conquered Crema in 1160 and rebuilt from 1185 to 1341, in Cistercian style: the walls and pillars, in the following decades, were covered with votive frescoes (of which fragments remain).
