View of Seeheim-Jugenheim from Geo-Naturpark Bergstraße-Odenwald

Highlight • Viewpoint

Large meadow with a rest hut. Invites you to linger. A partially good view is included for free. The view is somewhat obscured by trees.

In misty or foggy weather you can actually save the summit, but the rather dense forest around it is very mystical.

In clear weather, the view in the west to the Palatinate Forest and its highest mountain, the Donnersberg. Northwest you can see the Taunus, while to the north the skyscrapers of Frankfurt can be seen. The latter, however, much better from the castle Alsbach, as you have to see from Melibokus through some trees.

Heiligenberg Castle

Highlight • Castle

Where the Russian Tsar enjoyed the summer holiday: The castle is located on the western Odenwaldrand sublime and belongs to the community Seeheim-Jugenheim.

The special location has inspired people since the Middle Ages. The highlight of his significant charisma was in the 19th century. The castle has a special past for the related Russian, English and Hessian dynasties.

The most prominent descendants of these dynasties today are Philip, Prince Consort of Queen Elizabeth II of Britain and Juan Carlos I, King of Spain. Until 1910, the Tsars Alexander II and Nikolai II visited Heiligenberg Castle as a summer resort. Her empire was ruled from Jugenheim during this time. Here European politics and diplomacy took place.

Heiligenberg Castle Pond

Highlight • Lake

The idyllic castle pond or mountain pond was created during the time of Grand Duchess Wilhelmine and enlarged in 1877 by her son Prince Alexander. The newly laid road was paved with the excavation. The pond was probably also used for boating, as old rings on the small pier indicate this.

August 3, 2022,Melibokus – Felsenmeer Runde von Jugenheim
You don't have to understand why I'm missing 100 meters of altitude difference to the original route 😢

The tour was offered by Komoot and rated as “difficult”. But if you skip some (unnecessary) "shortcuts" and walk the 20m loop, then most of the difficulties will be avoided. Some sections of the trail are also suitable for mountain bikers, so appropriate attention is required. Especially if the path is very narrow, a step to the side can prevent …

In principle, the tour corresponds to the course of the “SJ2” circular route. We only deviated slightly every now and then.
The route runs over beautiful trails and only a few wide forest paths. I wouldn't have expected that.
We started counterclockwise from Jugenheim up to the Melibokus, across the Balkhäuser Valley to the Felsberg and from there via Heiligenberg …

After yesterday's strenuous mountain tour, I wanted to do a more relaxed tour today, also without a long journey. I chose the SJ 2 from Seeheim to the Melibokus via the Felsberg and the Kuralpe to Schloss Heiligenberg. As I parked my car in the Nonnenbrunnen car park below, it dawned on me that I'd done this tour before, but …

We made the most of the great hiking weather and the fact that our friend wanted to prepare for a longer hike. We headed off to our old home on the Bergstrasse to see if the old SJ2 was still there. Yes, it was still there in its old beauty and, apart from a few smaller trail sections, with well-developed …

There are currently a lot of fallen trees on the section just before crossing the L3103. It might be better to walk a little further along the main path up in the forest and cross the road further down...

A great loop from Alsbach over the Melibokus, past Balkhausen to Felsberg. On the other side, we returned past Heiligenberg Castle and back to the starting point. Challenging, but no problem for experienced hikers.

At the time of our hike, however, some trees were blocking the path, so we had to walk over them.

Beautiful circular hike from Jugenheim over the Melibokus to the Felsenmeer past the Kuralp towards Heiligenberg and back to Jugenheim.
