Aquarius Water Tower

Highlight • Monument

The Aquarius water tower has become one of the landmarks of the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr. Here you can learn a lot about water, its treatment and development in the water museum (set up by the local water supplier). Very interesting for families with children, as there is also a quiz in the water tower. Around the corner you will find a mobile snack bar on the bike path.

The wide hiking trail runs directly between the calmly flowing Ruhr and the wide, renatured meadows. From here you have a nice view over the water and over to the Mülheim youth hostel. In the meadows you can also observe many different waterfowl and migratory birds throughout the year.

Foot/cycle path along the Ruhr

Highlight • Cycleway

Beautiful cycle path, which runs very close to the Ruhr in parts. A few kilometers before the Mülheim water station, however, the cycle path is now closed to cyclists. A steep asphalt path then leads up to the road. Here you usually have to push the bike, which is very difficult for older or less fit cyclists. A sign saying "cyclists dismount" should perhaps be put up on the cycle path beforehand, as attempts to make the climb by bike will usually fail.
The route across the road to the water station or the promenade is easy to manage after turning several times thanks to good bicycle signage.

The Ruhrtal bridge in the south of Mülheim on the border with Essen is the longest road bridge made of steel in Germany at 1,830 meters. The building runs as part of the Federal Highway 52 in east-west direction.

The bridge spans the Ruhr valley in a wide arc and connects the cities of Düsseldorf and Essen via the A52 motorway. This section of the road used to be the freeway-like Federal Highway 288. The bridge is still one of Europe's most important bridge construction projects after the Second World War. The building rests on 18 hollow pillars. The highest roadway height is 65 m above the Ruhr.

Didn't visit it myself, but the people sitting in front of it made a very satisfied impression without exception.

View of Kettwig and the Ruhr

Highlight • Viewpoint

Essen Kettwig is beautifully situated on the Ruhr with a great cycle path along the Ruhr. The old town is also worth seeing.
