Marian Column in Strakonice

Highlight • Monument

The baroque Marian column in the center of Palacký Square dates from the years 1730 to 1740. It is also known by the name Plague Column. The monument previously stood in the Great Square at the site of an older column from 1586. The column features sculptures of four saints: Saint John of Nepomuk, Saint Joseph, Saint Anthony of Padua, and Saint Adalbert. At the top of the column is a larger-than-life depiction of the Virgin Mary.

Strakonice

Highlight • Settlement

The small town in South Bohemia is a nice stopover on a bike tour through the Czech Republic. There is a beautiful city center and a view of the historic moated castle at the mouth of the Volynka in the Otava is also worthwhile. And of course, such a city has a very practical use: there are enough shops, cafes and restaurants to strengthen. Incidentally, Strakonice also has bicycle history: Here there was a sprint score in the context of the International Peace Race.

Former Town Hall, Strakonice

Highlight • Historical Site

The former - and presumably soon also future - town hall replaced the original building on this site, which was destroyed by fire. The two-story building was erected in 1903 by Antonín Albert in the historicist style. The south facade with its gables is decorated with Neo-Renaissance elements and colorful sgraffito ornaments by Josef Bosáček. The first upper floor features rich ornamentation of intertwined tendrils, leaves, and flowers. The second upper floor is adorned with ornaments, and between the windows is the town coat of arms with a Czech lion. The arched fields of the tower on both sides of the windows show representations of justice and self-government. The building at various times housed a grammar school, a primary school, and until recently was a residential building. It is currently being converted and renovated and is soon to serve as the town hall again. The city administration is still housed in the building to the left of this one.

The modern steel suspension bridge over the Otava has connected the historic old town with the castle since 2009 and offers pedestrians and cyclists a quiet alternative to the Jan Palach Bridge. The 109-meter-long bridge blends harmoniously into its surroundings and offers beautiful views of the river, the city, and the castle.

Strakonice Castle

Highlight • Castle

The Strakonice Castle is a magnificent complex that combines Gothic and Baroque styles, originally built in the 13th century. Historically associated with the Knights of Malta, who resided here for centuries, the castle houses the Romanesque Church of St. Procopius, impressive 14th-century frescoes – the oldest north of the Alps – and the distinctive Rumpál Tower. Today, the castle houses the Museum of the Middle Otava Region, the Šmidinger Library, and an art school.
