The steam locomotive 97.217 🚂, which could move both by gearwheel (Abt system) and classic adhesion drive, was built in 1903 by the Floridsdorfer Lokomotivfabrik. The last day of operation was May 24th, 1978, since the rack-and-pinion operation on the route was discontinued.
Adhesion 30 km/h
Cog wheel 15 km/h, later 20 km/h due to improved brakes, among other things

Very nice and well-kept place which is not only equipped with a drinking fountain, but also with a public toilet. On weekdays you can also shop at the local "Nah & Frisch". Anyone who has planned Vordernberg as the end point of a leisurely excursion can strengthen themselves in the "Schwarzer Adler" inn.

This steam locomotive and the sister model were built in 1942 by the Floridsdorfer Lokomotivfabrik.
Although the machines had three times the power of the original Erzbergbahn locomotives class 97, they were not satisfactory. There were constant technical problems, which resulted in long stays in the main workshop. Also, the machines could only be used on the southern ramp of the Erzberg between Vordernberg and the Erzberg because of their mass and the non-existent reinforcement of the rack, which was necessary for the performance.

Road number 97 402 was parked as early as 1949 and used as a source of spare parts. At the ÖBB, the second locomotive was assigned the number 297.401 in 1953. This locomotive was in service until 1964.

The type was the most powerful, but also the most complex cogwheel steam locomotive in the world. Both machines were retired in 1968, and number 297.401 has stood as a memorial in Vordernberg since 1976.

Vordernberg Markt Railway Station

Highlight • Monument

The train station is the starting point for the museum train journeys of the Erzbergbahn association. He runs a museum in the station (about the days of travel). Until 2001, the station was even controlled electrically by the ÖBB as course book route 61.
Immediately after leaving the station, the 13 m high Rötzgraben viaduct follows with a gradient of 71 per mille. [erzbergbahn.at]
