Murnau Moss

Highlight • Trail

Moors, wet meadows, unique flora and fauna - the Murnauer Moos is a true pearl of nature. Many endangered animal and plant species find a refuge in the largest contiguous and still preserved moor in Central Europe. This natural area can best be discovered by hiking through the middle of the Murnauer Moos. Hardly any tour in the Blue Land offers more insights into the nature and history of the moor than the popular Moos circular trail.

The approximately 12-kilometer-long hike starts at the hiking car park and the biological station, then leads to the Ramsachkircherl, also known as "Ähndl", and from there the circular trail through the moor area starts. A special highlight on the circular hike is the plank path. At the junction of the Moos circular trail in Murnau/Westenried, you reach this after about a kilometer. On wooden planks you cross the natural moor landscape and have a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains. The boardwalk was designed as a so-called moor nature trail and therefore offers even closer insights into the flora and fauna. For an even more intensive insight into the flora and fauna as well as the history of the Murnauer Moos, we recommend the guided moor hikes.

Ramsach Chapel (Ähndl)

Highlight • Religious Site

Information board of the meditation path:
"The Ramsachkircherl, affectionately called 'Ähndl' in the vernacular, is said to be the oldest church in Upper Bavaria, probably founded in the 7th century by St. Mang.
Christianization began in southern Bavaria as early as the 3rd and 4th centuries through preaching wandering monks. The first hermitages arose, later churches and monasteries were founded. According to ancient traditions, there is said to have been a Celtic cult here when an Irish-Scottish wandering monk settled down. It was said earlier that the old altar stone and three stone steps should still come from this time. An ossuary used to belong to the churchyard, which is enclosed with a wall. In 1634, when the plague raged in Murnau, many dead were carried here for burial. "
