What to expect on Miller Peak – Iron Bear Peak loop from Iron Creek Trailhead
The route starts relatively flat along a stream for a couple of miles before the real climbing begins. You'll transition from forested sections to more open, rocky terrain as you ascend towards the ridgetops. The trail offers a journey through varied landscapes, from woodland flowers like white shooting stars and Indian Paintbrush in the lower valleys to expansive meadows and rocky outcrops higher up. The highlight is undoubtedly the panoramic vistas from Miller Peak's summit, where you can gaze out at Stuart and the Enchantments Peaks, as well as Navaho and Earl. Expect some steep sections and switchbacks, which can be runnable on the descent if you're feeling strong. This loop is a significant workout, best suited for those who enjoy sustained climbs and technical descents.
Planning your visit
This loop is a popular route on the eastern slopes of the Cascades, so while you might find solitude, don't be surprised to encounter others, including mountain bikers and dirt bikers. The Iron Creek Trailhead does not require parking passes and lacks amenities like toilets or drinking water, so come prepared with everything you need. Crucially, there's no water available on the Miller Peak trail once you start the steep climb from the creek, so carry plenty of hydration. The trail is generally easy to follow, but always be mindful of conditions, especially creek crossings which can lead to wet feet in lower valleys depending on the season.
